In one particularly troubling scene, Moretti takes Ariel to a hut where a cult member sits shucking hundreds of oysters, looking for the pearls that the group use to decorate the necklaces they all wear. Another unsettling moment involves the journalists listening to Moretti's new album for the first time. Should they be entertained or uncomfortable? In Moretti's eyes, probably both. There's no sexual violence in Opus, but an undercurrent of gendered power is a stalwart of the horror genre.

The sheep in the film provide plenty of opportunity f💞or metaphor, and Abbot expands on the New Testament comparisons: he thinks "the idea of the shepherd leaving one away from his flock, going to get the one sheep that he left behind, but then leaving the rest" can also be applied to the family dynamics in🐻 the film. "There's a lot to play with there."

As for the mafia parallels, there may not be any organized crime in Bring Them Down, but there's plenty of violence in the film against both man and beast that's presented in a frighteningly casual and matter-of-fact way. Combined with an oppressive, seemingly inevitable expectation of masculinity that weighs heavily on both Michael and Jack from the patriarchal figures in their lives, the compa꧟rison isn't actually that left field.

It's not just the movie's themes but its form, too, as Abbott thinks the film's structure – which abruptly and unexpectedly switches its narrative POV from Michael to Jack halfway through the runtime – is also reminiscent of a mob flick. "You're following this one character and you learn just enough about what's going on to have a💦 fair amount of questions, and then it switches," he explains. "And then some of those [questions] get answered, until this sort of final crescendo. I really liked it. I thought it was exciting."

There's no clear hero or villain in the movie and no apparent winner or loser as the altercation between Michael and Jack plays out, and the futility of the situation plays into the tragedy of the film. "It's not ꦡan obvious thing why the characters are pitted against each other. It just sort of happens," Abbott explains. "I love in movies where a small event changes the course of a character's life, and the reason why Michael is pitted against Barry's character is sort of silly.

"It's really just a series of misundꦐerstandings and mistakes [then] all of a sudden this mayhem starts happening. If they'd just gotten together and chatted for an hour about everything, probably a 🌠lot of things could get resolved, but it doesn't. But that's the drama of it. They're enemies, but neither of the characters even knows why, and that's what's interesting."

Year: 1977

Trap ꧋star Josh Hartnett finds himself in another sticky situation in his next movie – and, this time, 37,000 feet in the air.

He stars i🌸n Fight or Flight, a new action thriller produced by John Wick helmer Basil Iwanyk and made by his production company Thunder Road Films. James Madigan is in the director's chair, and the cast also includes Bridgerton's Charithra Chandran and The Mandalorian's Katee Sackhoff. This is Madigan's big-screen directorial debut, but he's previously worked behind the scenes on movies like Tra🐬nsformers: Rise of the Beast and Iron Man 2.

Lionsgate first announced an American P🦩sycho remake some 13 years ago, with music video director Noble Jones set to pen the script. Stand-out performances and drip-fed narrative details will have you guessing all the way through who – if anyone – may prove successful.

Critics have praised the film for its tension, and it's part of what's l🍬anded it a 92% score on . And it feels in a year where thrillers have either leaned more comedic (Trap, Wolfs) or psychological (Blink Twice), Conclave is well up there as a contender for the t🦄op spot.

Perhaps the most unusual reaction to the movie so far though has been the buzz it's been generating online. Memes have been popping up on social media along with comparisons to everything from Mean Girls to🦄 RuPaul's Drag Race. Check out some of the best below:

While these are a lot of fun, there's a really interesting current beneath these comparisons. The drama at the heart of the film is its most juicy element and shows how de༺eply the lure of power can be corrupted. Take Father Lawrence, for example. He starts the film eschewing the spotlight and hoping for a quick and easy election – until he starts getting votes.

Stanley Tucci's Bellini sees right through him, eviscerating him with the accusation that he is hungry for the papacy, and has always been. Even though Bellini later apologizes, it turns out he was right on the money with his first hunch: when he asks his old friend Lawrence what his papal name would be, Fiennes' holy man responds without a second of hesitation. But, he's not thought about it, right?

It's the same human drama that makes reality TV so addictive. When interaction is boiled down to its most essential in moments of high stress, people show who they really are. So yes, Conclave is very similar to dramas like The Real Housewiv💟es, in the sense that it's all about personal emotion at its core – and that's what makes it so entertaining.

But, at the end of the day, whether you come to Conclave through Mean Girls memes or through critical buzz, the film won't be quite what you expect. As – like all of the best thrillers – Berger's latest will keep you gu♈essing with a tﷺone that can't quite be nailed down.

My best advice𝄹? Shed your expectations, sit back, and enjoy the ride. Who knew religious succession could be this much fun?

Nicole Kidman’s new erotic thriller Babygirl had a lot of buzz when it arrived at Venice Film Festival earlier this year, and now the first trailer♈ has arrived. The new teaser begins with a chance meeting between Kidman’s Romy and Harris Dickinson’s Samuel on the streets of New York City.

After he stops a dog from attacking her, she finds out he’s one of the new intern🀅s joining her company. “Being a CEO means being a collaborator and a nurturer,” Romy begins as we see her tightly controlled corporate life, “Everyone is waiting for me to buckle under the pressure.” Romy and Samuel then begin an ill-advised affair all about power-imbalance and control, which soon seems to spiral.

As the trailer goes on you begin to question who is reꦗally in charge, as Samuel starts to infiltrate her family life. “I could make one call and you could lose everything,” he tells her as Romy seems to be struggling with what’s happening. Netflix has released the main trailer for ꦚWoman of the Hour, Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick's directorial debut.

As well as making her debut in the director's chair, Kendrick also stars in the crime thriller – she plays aspiring actor Che💞ryl, a contestant on The Dating Game who wins a date with a man named Rodney Alcala – who also happens to be a serial killer. Set in 1978, Woman of the Hour is based on a shocking true story. Arrested Development's Tony Hale plays the show's host, while It Follows' Daniel Zovatto is Alcala.

The new trailer, which you can watch above, immediately sets the tone for the film, with Cheryl w🍰alking hurriedly through an empty parking lot at night, breathing heavily, as a man lurks behind her. We then cut to an audition, which doesn't go very well for Cheryl. Down on her luck and struggling to meet rent, she gets a job on The Dating Game as the show's eligible bachelorette, and comedic clips from the show as Cheryl grills the three male contestants are interspersed with haunting snippets of Alcala with his victims. Don't be fooled by the campy '70s TV soundstage, this is a chilling true story, after all...

But, the facility is a sinister place, with a patient (Lithgow) and his puppet named Jenny Pen tormenting the other patients, including the judge. The film premiered at this year's Fantastic Fest and is expected to hit Shudder in 2025.

In a new Instagram post, Shyamal✨an celebrated the success of Trap – and shared a tiny tease about what he's getting started on now.

Trap stars Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a regular suburban dad who just so happens to be notorious serial killer the Butcher. He takes his daughter (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert for Lady R🌼aven (Saleka Night Shyamalan), unaware that the whole thing is – you guessed it – a trap to catch the Butc♏her. 

"I made the decision to do it live," Shyamal🌠an previously told us ofꦗ the movie's concert sequences. "Josh is performing and says his dialogue and there's a re🐭al concert going on. The lighting, the performance, the crowd, they're all genuinely reacting to what&apos☂;s happening."

There are no furt🐟her details just yet on Shyamalan's next movie, but with recent years bringing us Knock at the Cabin, Old, Glass, and Split, we're sure we'll be in for a treat whenever it arrives.

"You fix things, right?" Yep, that is exactly what Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s unnamed characters do for a living in Jon Watts’ cucumber-cool crime caper. Until, that is, both are called independently to take care of an increasingly complex job that begins in a New York hotel penthouse suite. And so, Pitt and Clooney are suddenly forced to work together. "I’m going to supervise," says Pitt, as he watches his rival start to move the body. Except that he too is sucked in when he discovers kilos of drugs in the room. Oh, an🌳d theꦡ 'Kid', as he’s credited, is not dead. Played by Austin Abrams (Euphoria), this chattering student is the innocent patsy in a deadly situation. 

Who is setting whom up? That’s the big question, albeit one that doesn’t prove interesting enough to be the film’s driving force. Watts seems far more intrigued by reuniting Clooney and Pitt, very much riffing on their 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Ocean’s Eleven charisma, as they🐼 bi𝓀cker their way through the film like a married couple. Some moments work very well - notably one sequence on a subway train that suggests there is a little love between these two warhorses. There’s a sense Wolfs wants to be a latter-day Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, yet it never quite earns the poignancy of that Newman/Redford classic. But Watts - best known for the 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy - is a dab hand at action scenes, like the crazed chase through New York that ensues when the near-naked Kid wakes up and tries to make a run for it. Billed as everything from a psychological thriller to a dark comedy, the film follows cocktail waitress and aspiring nail artist Frida (Nao⛄mi Ackie), who's been itching to cross paths with King again, having shared a brief flirtation with him while working his annual gala the year before. In an attempt to get his attention, she and her best friend Jess (Alia Shawkat, on top, giggle-inducing form) swap their uniforms for silky dresses and infiltrate the party this time round – which leads to them to spend the evening with King and his ﷽fancy friends, before he whisks them all away to his private island.

At first, the vacation feels like a dream: private suites, pool days, and delicious multi-course dinners, followed by drug-fueled, dance-filled nights. Christian Slater's Vic gets irritable whenever he doesn't have an umbrellaed drink in-hand, Cody (Simon Rex) insisﷺts on calling Sarah (Adria Arjona) 'babe' despite her obvious disdain for the term, and everyone keeps stealing Jess's lighter, but who cares? 

The characters' joy is so infectious, you get swept up in it as a viewer. So much so, that the trip's more unsettling aspects, like the non-English speaking housekeeper who seems to recognize Frida, and the island's venomous snake problem, barely even register. When Jess suddenly disappears, Frida realizes she keeps losing huge chunks of time, and the film turns into a bloodsoaked nightmare, then, it completely knocks you for six. You mean to tell me that's what's been going on?!

Menacing Mike

It seems a little glib to say, but Blink Twice sees Kravitz weaponize her real-life fiancé Tatum's natural charm to devastating effect. The movie opens with Frida watching a video of King apologizing for his behavior, as he confirms he's stepped down as CEO from his company KingTech – though what he did exactly is never divulged. Even so, that's all we need to know to assume he's probably Not a Good Dude, but much like Frida, we kind of forget about all that once he starts showering her with champagne, asking how she got the scar on her temple with car🐻ing curiosity, and making her laugh as they play kiss-chase on the lawn. It turns out, though, he's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

"I wanted Slater King to be somebody that the au♏dience felt comfortable and safe with, whilst also ensuring it would make sense that Frida would want to drop everything and leave with him," Kravitz recently told . "If you're going to leave with a stranger🔥, you have to make that connection feel real, so the audience never questions why."

"[We] talked about lots of different versions of Slater," Tatum said at the LA premiere (via ). "The one thing that we both agreed upon is that w♏e didn't want to do the very stereotypical movie moment in a thriller where you reveal the bad guy."

The last part seems crucial in achieving Kravitz's vision here. King isn't a supervillain per se, but he's a man with immense wealth and power, and, well, what happens when all🌼 that goes to someone's head and twists their morality into something sinister.

Kravitz, who co-wrote the script with E.T. Feigenbaum, does similarly clever work with some of the supporting characters, too, like Geena Davis's bumbling assistant Stacey and Levon Hawke's crypto whizzkid Lucas, who seem to represent those who witness, or even facilitate, gross abuses of power, through generational and ღgender-specific lenses.

Reality bites

So why did this film – one that admittedly made me chuckle and want to hop on Booking.com at the earliest possible convenience – leave me so shell-shocked? I'm a horror-loving gorehound who barely flinches at most things these days. But it's because Kravitz injects so many small, toe-curlingly relatable moments in amongst the magical realism. We're not dealing with demons, killer clowns, or sharks here, we're faced with evils that are terrifyingly human. Even when I've seen a genre movie in the cinema late at night, I walk the 30 minutes from ♈the train station home; I'm pretty certain there are no ghosts and ghoulies lurking around Maidstone. After Blink Twice? I got a cab.

"I felt like there♌ was a lot more that needed to be discussed, but there wasn't really a place to say these things, and it didn't feel safe to say them out loud," Kravitz told the , as she remembered starting to write the script back in 2017, as the #MeToo movement looked to be simmering down. "So I started writing because I wanted to express these feelings and thoughts and because I wanted to try and highlight the absurdity of what society asks or expects of women."

Clearly inspired by what used to go on on Jeffrey Epstein's Epstein Island, and other horrific true events, Kravitz has conjured up something that achieves the perfect balance between entertaining thrills and uncompromising, rageful message, which is 🙈no mean feat nowadays. Forgetting may be a "gift", as King suggests towards the end of Blink Twice, but I won't be shaking this one off any time soon.

Naomi Ackie plays down-on-her-luck waitress Frida, who accepts an invitation from tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) to jump on a private jet for a getaway at his stylishly appointed private island. This luxurious setting is populated by partygoers (and poisonous snakes), but from the first close-up on a reptilian face it becomes clear something is amiss. Kravitz (who co-wrote with E.T. Feigenbaum) takes her time revealing precisely what is actually happening on the island, building🌜 up to a masterful twist that recontextualizes prior scenes and lends new meaning to small pieces of dialogue. 

The chemistry between leads Ackie and Tatum is simply scintillating; what’s more, they receive pitch-perfect support from an idiosyncratic ensemble that includes Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, and Christian Slater. The aforementioned play misfits who keep their motives close to their chests while still being people you would want to party with – particularly during an exquisitely timed, post-dinner needle-drop of 'Y🐟oung Heart﷽s Run Free'. 

Above all, though, Blink Twice is an electrifying showcase for Kravitz, who is emerging as one of the most talented and socially aware Black women operating on a global stage. The influences of The Stepford Wives on plot and 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:The Shining’s Overlook Hotel on set design🥃 are thoughtfully utilised, and even if the worl🦹d portrayed is a dark place, the filmmaking on display dazzles.

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for𝓰 upcoming crime thriller Woman of the Hour – and it's just as unsettling as you'd expe🐭ct.

Directed by 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Pitch Perfect's Anna Kendrick, the film – which currently has a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes – follows a fictionalized version of real-life criminal Rodney Alcala, who was dubbed 'The Dating Game Killer' after he appeared on the reality show in the middle 💞of his murder spree back 🔥in 1978. 

Don't Br♈eathe's Daniel Zovatto brings Alcala to life, while Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, the contestant set to go on a date with him after he won the episode. Bradshaw subsequently refused to meet Alcala after taping, having found him "creepy", though it's seems like the movie will depict things differently.

The promo, which you can watch above, ꦓopens with Cheryl being told to "laugh and smile over and over" by The Dating Game's host (Tony Hale). On set, Bachelor #3, Alcala, assures her they're "going to have a great time together". 

A montage follows, which sees Cheryl go out with Alcala and explain that she only agreed to go on the show as her agent assured her it "would get me seen". "Do you feel seen?" he asks ominously, as the rest of the teaser shows him photographing several young peoplꦑe, washing blood of his hands, an♕d blindfolding a woman. 

The trailer then cuts back to the original taping, with a producer telling Cheryl: "No matter♍ what words they use, the question beneath the question remains the same." 

"All right, what's th🐻e question?" Cheryl replies, as the woman says, "Which one of you will hurt me?" Chilling...

"Thankfully, we're both 20 years older and more experienced," says Damon, speaking to GamesRadar+ and the Inside Total Film podcast. "But yeah, the first time I worked with him, it was pretty fraught, and the word on the street in Hollywood was that it was a bomb because our rel🐓ease date got pushed and all this stuff, and so we all thought we were in trouble."

"I love Doug, and I lov🍨e the way he works, and I love his body of work. [His] movies are all wonderful. They're all very different, and they're totally all really unique. And that's what we needed with this one."

The new movie doesn't just include a reunion between Damon and Liman, but also between Damon and 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Downsizing star 🎶Hong Chau, and of course Damon and his long-term friend and acting buddy Casey Affleck. "Yeah. I mean that I love this job so much, and the only thing better than doing it is doing it with people that I care about and really admire. Now, the actor is striking out as a lead once more in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap as Cooper, a doting dad accompanying her daughter to a concert – but one harboring a dark secret (if you 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:take the trailers at face value, anyway).

But not many get the chance to work with auteurs such as M. Night Shyamal🌊an and Christopher Nola♐n in their careers, let alone in back-to-back years.

When asked how the two🥀 big-n𒅌ame directors compare in their approach, Harnett offered up an intriguing answer.

"What’s great about Night and what’s great about Chris – there are two things that make them very similar – is that they’re both meticulous a♒bout the way they go about things," Hartnett to𒀰ld GamesRadar+ and the Inside Total Film podcast. "But they’re also incredibly collaborative."

Harnett 🌄continued, "When a director is at the top of their game in the way Chris and Night are, they don’t feel the need to guard their creation with🐼 everything they have from their collaborators because they trust the people they’ve hired to be a part of it."

"Ultimately, their vision is so clear that it can contain a lot of different perspectives without being threatening to the💟m. Other directors who are a bit less sure-footed will guard everything and not allow you an opinion."

That positive feeling even extends to the environment M. Night Shyamalan – best known for dark thrillers such as The Sixth Sense – 🐭fosters on s𝓡et.

"I love the collaborative nature of i🐼t and Night, I think,🙈 is singularly warm on set – the opposite of the scripts he writes," Harnett explains. "He wants to create a family atmosphere so you feel that kind of comfort [when] exploring the character."

Trap is out in UK cinemas on August 9.
