Alongside that 1TB version, the 9100 Pro has 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacity options as well. Performance

As you might expect, the answer is “fast”. I always start my SSD testing with some sequential read and write benchmarks in CrystalDiskMark, and the Samsung 9100 Pro pulled in even faster numbers than the Crucial T700 Pro. After averagin🍨g the resuജlts of three tests, the 9100 Pro comes just shy of its on-the-box read speed promises, but it’s still the fastest drive we’ve ever tested by some margin. It does, however, exceed its write speed promises.

But how do these synthetic tests equate to practical uses in the real world? With video game support and DirectStorage waning, the best use for these next-gen SSDs at the moment is zipping massive files from one place on your computer to another. I first transferred 77GB of game files and data from one drive to another using Steam and set a stopwatch on how long it took. Moving the game files from Samsung’s slightly older 990 Evo drive to the new 9100 Pro took just 20 seconds, and transferring them back again took a similar 22 seconds. Similarly, in Windows, transferring 107GB of 4K gameplay footage was similarly speedy. Moving from the 990 Evo to the 9100 Pro took 28 seconds, and moving it back took 32 seconds. For a 3-hour-plus chunk of 4K video, that’s a pretty slick transfer, and it gives you a sense 🦹🃏of how the 9100 Pro is going to interact with Gen 4 drives you might already own.

When Gen 5 drives started appearing, it was clear that there were teething issues. Perhaps the biggest one was thermal control, and Samsung had certainly found the solution before launching its first proper Gen 5 product. I put the 9100 Pro under my motherboard’s regular heatsink, and it did a great job of keeping its temperature control - no massive heatsink needed, no air-cooling system necessary (looking at you, Adata), and no special thermal pad, either. The 9100 Pro had an ambient temperature of just 43 degrees, and it only rose to a 46-degree peak when I was doing all of those file transfer tests. Then we come to gaming tests. I’ll reiterate once again that the tests I’m about to share with you aren’t perfect measurements by any means. Loading up various games and stopwatching how long they take is an imperfect science, and I accept that, but I do so to give you a broad idea of the types of gaming performance you can expect from a drive like this. For comparison with the previous fastest drive I’ve used, I went back to the Crucial T700 Pro and got some refreshed benchmarks. While 🔥I will compare them for the sake of this review, the Crucial and WD Blue SSDs were tested in a different computer, so keep that in mind.

It’s hardly by much, but it’s a noticeable trend in each game (except Outer Wilds, which loads so fast that this could very easily be human error). I’m honestly happy to see these kinds of improvements, even if they’re not exactly going to be noticeable if you’re not sitting with a stopwatch on each loading screen, like me. Baldur’s Gate 3 did net the biggest performance leap on the 9100 Pro, which is nice if you’re a big ol’ save scummer like me.

As you can likely see for yourself, though, the leap from the Gen 4 WD Blue SN500 is a matter of about 5-7 seconds in most titles. If you’re buying to mainly play multiplayer games, like Hunt Showdown, you’re still going to need to wait for the other players loading on older drives before you can start playing anyway, and depending on things♍ like servers, connection speeds, and all the rest of it, that slick loading speed will probably balance out with other players anyway. In jam-packed city builders and management games like Planet Zoo, are you really going to notice a few seconds more when loading in? I doubt it, but you might notice that larger dent in your bank balance after spending🌞 big on the 9100 Pro.

Windows DirectStorage was s💯upposed to be a widely adopted feature in a lot of games by this point but, over the last few years, it’s become this obscure, hooded figure lurking in the back corner of the pub. There are rumours around the game dev patrons that talking to this guy can improve your loading times, but hardly anyone ever does.

DirectStorage essentially allows a Gen 5 SSD to bypass sending information to your CPU, and diverts it right to your GPU, alꦫlowing for faster loading and rendering. The problem is, the software is still imperfect and, right now, barely makes a difference - certainly not one that’s worth the inevitable extra coding and busywork it takes to integrate it into in-progress games. The list of supported titles right now is woefully small and, honestly, even if your favorite game is found on it, I wouldn’t say ♎spending the extra money on a Gen 5 drive is going to be worth it.

For this review, I checked DirectStorage games at the door because I wanted to see how the performance of regular titles could be improved through the latest standard of Gen 5 SSD tech. In all honesty, I expecꦏted worse results, but the improvements I saw over Crucial’s flagship from just a year or so ago fill me with hope that we are going to see better improvements in loading times as the technology increases in terms of raw performance. That said, loading times are already pretty minuscule, so until a few massive games come along and use this tech to have no loading screens whatsoever, it’s going to be hard to argue these things are worth their additional costs.

Should you buy the Samsung 9100 Pro?

The Samsung 9100 Pro is easily the best SSD I’ve ever tested, and🦩 the fastest across the board. It is nothing short of a feat of engineering, but one you probably don’t need, and won’t for quite some time yet.

Yes, if you’re looking to build the most fu﷽tureproofed gaming PC imaginable, then this, or the brand new WD Black SN1800 (the equivalent from SanDisk), is going to be the drive to pick. If you’re a full-time content creator, video editor, or someone who churns through digital storage with ease, the Samsung 9100 Pro is going to offer you the best performance possible. Having seen some improvements over previous Gen 5 options, I can recommend this as the product to go for if you’re married to the idea of a next-gen device.

If it’s just for gaming, the numbers can’t lie. You are going to get extremely slick loading times across the b⛄oard with the 9100 Pro. The question you have to answer is whether or not the few seconds' worth of quicker loading times are going to be worth it for you compared to a Gen 4 option that’s potentially hundreds cheaper. Until there’s widely adopted support within every game, I’d still recommend that most gamers stick with Gen 4.

How I tested the Samsung 9100 Pro

I put the Samsung 9100 Pro to work by running it through our usual gauntlet of storage benchmarks. Firstly, I used CrystalDiskMark to give me some synthetic benchmarking scores to broadly test its sequential read and write speeds. After three of theꦦse benchmarks at different points of the testing process, I averaged out the results and presented them in a table.

I then u🍨sed both Steam and Windows 11 to transfer various bits of data from one drive to another, timing how long it took. I kept an eye on temperatures while doing so to assess thermal control.

For gaming, I loaded into various games, some with typically slower loading speeds and some with faster ones. I used a stopwatch to track these loading times, and performed the same tests on two competing drives to come to a verdict on the results, and the Samsung 9100 Pro’s value 🍒for money.

So I'm a bit confused. How could Samsung have looked on at the Apple Vision Pro's brief stint in the spotlight and thought "oh yes, we'd love some of that"?

Admittedly, this is all conjecture until we hear more about Samsung's headset, which is said will operate via a new form of Android called Android XR. But one look at the teaser or prototype images will tell you that this looks like a high-end, premium device that takes a lot of design lessons from Apple's ski mask. The thing smells e👍xpensive, and that doesn't fill me with a lot of excitement.

It doesn't take an expert in VR hardware to tell you that one of this technology's biggest problems is that it's always been prohibitively pricey. Apple's $3,500 foray is a testament to that, and if it hasn't been that popular, it's because hardly anyone can afford it. In my eyes, the reason Meta conquered the XR world is its accessible pricing. It’d take more than a quick session in Fortnite for me to detect the difference in refresh rate, but at face value, the experience feels just as snappy. My hands-on impressions aside, there are a couple of OLED G6 and G8 features that should help both panels win players over. For instance, Samsung has armed both with OLED Safeguard+ tech, which uses a “pulsating heart pipe” and “Dynamic Cooling System” to shift more heat than traditional methods. Performance

Oh lordy, this thing is beautiful.

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9's one obvious limitation is pi🌄xel density. But that was a known issue coming in. Moreov༺er, this isn't a monitor aimed at content creation pros. It's meant for gaming and, given that remit, the OLED G9 positively nails it. 

The combination of the huge scale and the spectacular sizzle and speed of the QD-OLED panel makes for an unrivaled experience. It's both incredibly impactful and immersive, and it's better optimized for PC than one of the 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:best OLED TVs. Likewise, the OLED G9 blows away any L♛CD൲ monitor with a mini-LED backlight for HDR performance. This, simply, is the stellar experience that HDR technology has long promised but hasn't previously delivered on PC.

How I tested the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is all about gaming, so I ran itꦍ through a gauntlet of Steam titles including Cyberpunk 2077 for spectacular HDR visuals, Apex Legends to assess speed and response, and Total War to get a feel for how strategy titles work on such a wide panel.

I look for everything from brightness and contrast to accuracy, response, and latency and likewise, consider how this OLED panel compares to both its direct competitors and more conventional LCD-based displays. Performance on the Windows desktop is also tested, then I assess build quality, design, and features to arrive at a rounded picture of overall display per༒formance and quality.

Design and Features

The QN85C looks smart, but admittedly does pay a toll for its backlight technology, having a depth of 28mm depth. The silver-grey bezel is predictably thin though, with a small Samsung badge placed bottom right of the screen. The panel sits on a static, central stand, which makes it very easy to accommodaꦑte on regular AV furniture if you’re no𓂃t wall-mounting.

Around the back are four HDMI inputs. All support 4k 120HZ sources, with HDMI 3 eARC enabled. Given that many rival sets still only offer two 4k 120HZ capable inputs (including Sony, Philips, and Panasonic) this is a big selling point. Samsung QN85C: Performance 

I was expecting a𝓀 lot from the Samsung QN85C in terms of performance. 🐼I got even more.

Samsung’s Quantum Mini LED backlight 💮execution here is nothing short of a revelation. The QN85C manages to avoid uneven halos and even delivers a convincing black level in letterbox movie bars.

As this is the cheapest Mini LED in Samsung’s Neo QLED I feared it wouldn’t have the same le🐈vel of HDR snap found higher up the Neo QLED range. While it’s certainly not as bright as its stablem🌳ates, it still packs a punch, with a bright average picture level.

When setting up HDR on my PS5, I actually winced at the full-field white. Thankfully, with⛦ real-world footage, the balance becomes far more approachable. Peak HDR brightness was measured at just under 1100 nits with a 10 percent measurement window. This means♏ peak HDR highlights are largely delivered without compromise, giving images real dimensional depth.

The caveat is the🐬re’s no support for Dolby Vision🔜, which if you’re a movie lover could be a deal breaker. Given that most of the content I watch on Netflix and Disney+ is Dolby Vision encoded, I can’t help feeling I’m missing out. Obviously, this impacts Dolby Vision-encoded games as well.

What we do get is HDR 10 and HDR10+, as favored by Prime Video. Local dimming is variable, but for the best contrast, I opted for Low. Naturally, the set triggers Game mode when a console is🧸 connected, but you might want to activate HDR in the Game Picture Expert settings to prevent the picture from looking overly bright.

At the heart of the QN8🔯5C’s picture performance is Samsung’s latest Neural Quantum Processor 4K. This silicon takes advantage of AI and neural networks to optimize images on a scene-by-scene basis. You can leave the TV on Intelligent Picture mode, and it’ll manage bright♊ness, contrast, and detail, adjusting for the content type. For most viewers, this is a pain-free route to consistent performance - but there is a caveat when it comes to audio performance (more anon).

There are of course more traditional image presets also available, including Standard, Eco, Movie, Filmmaker mode, and Dynamic. I generally left the set on Standar༺d, as it looked consistently good. The Dynamic mode predictably oversaturates reds and blues, although whites really pop (which could be good for anime, potentially).

When it comes t𓆏o overall picture level brightness, I note🅺d a significant difference between Standard and Eco settings. The former makes good use of the set’s native luminosity, while Eco is far more in line with Movie and Filmmaker modes, albeit without their color temperature bias. 

The QN85C is bright enough for gaming and general viewing in a brightly lit room but also avoids that insipid greyness that can cloud an LED set when the lighting goes down. The TV comes into its own as a gaming display. 120FPS gameplay is as smooth and detailed as the very 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:best 120Hz 4K TVs.

Samsung actually offers two Game settings, one with most settings disabled, and another which reinstates some processing to maximize picture quality. With the latter, dubbed Game Motion Plus, input lag was measured at a tardy 25ms. If you opt for the more pur🌸e approach of the default Game mode, this drops to an impressive 9.4ms (1080/60). There’s a good deal of sound steerage, and it's suitably immersꦓive with Dolby Atmos movies and cinematic TV shows (the soundstage is tall and w⭕ide).

However, while I could live with the QN85C’s Intelligent Mode for video, I was less impr🎐essed with how AI managed audio. I found the Intelligent audio mode overly dialogue focused🤡, and the Amplify setting is really harsh. My advice is to stick with regular audio settings.

The 65-inch Samsung QN85C is a great proposition for both gamers and m😼ovie fans. It manages that rare feat of delive💛ring on both fronts, with a fully loaded HDMI input board that doesn’t limit 4K 120HZ playback and a dynamic HDR performance that rewards movie fans.

The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is huge. With a 14.6-inch scrꦗeen, it far exceeds even the largest iPad Pro and Samsung is aiming for a mix of a laptop experience and a tablet, but can it succeed, especially at such a high entry price, when it doesn’t even come with 🌞a keyboard?

The Tab S8 Ultra is unden👍iably an incredible media player and despite not having a𝔉n OLED screen, it carries the deepest blacks I’ve ever seen on a tablet. So much so it’s made an excellent bedroom TV over my few weeks of testing. At night, the image just hovers in the darkness - excellent.

The slick display is great fo💃r Call of Duty Mobile and I was able to crank up the settings to max without issue. On Diablo Immortal, I was slightly disappointed as I wasn’t able to set the resolution to ultra settings. High yes, ultra no. And this did actually make a difference compared to playing on a 2020 iPad Pro (which can do ultra) as the large display on the Samsung showed up the lower resolution a little. Put the tablet on a table though and get a bit of distance, play with a controller and this becomes much less of an issue. And in fairness, the tablet feels too big to play games on without a controller. Unless it’s something a little more chilled that doesn’t have control inputs that try to mimic a controller on-screen. Serene puzzlers like Monument Valley work very nicely for example.

Four speakers provide significantly more punch than your average tablet and I had no issue with them at all for movies, video calls, gaming or listening to music with the audio coming through clearly in handheld mode or when propped up several feet away on a coffee table. Annoyingly, as with most Samsung devices, you’ll have to dig through the settings and turn on Dolby Atmos as it’s still turned off by default. And you’ll want it on as it creates a much more immersive experience that makes it sound like there is suddeꦕnly a collection of ext🐽ra speakers opening up.

What about general use? 

For day to day use, the Tab S8 Ultra looks fantastic when browsing the web and is grea🍎t for watching content on YouTube or reading longer articles as you can read 🔯much more at once without scrolling compared to regular tablets. When reading, it might be tempting to hold it vertically like you normally would with a tablet, but the large size does make it a little unwieldy for longer sessions.

It’s remarkably light for its size, and very thin, but can get a little top heavy when holding vertically. Unless you’re able to prop it up against your knees if reading in b𝕴ed, sprawled across a sofa or perhaps against a crossed leg if sitting normally. I actually found it was a bit easier to handle when holding horizontally, which does of course add some ಞextra vertical scrolling, but there’s still a good amount of space in this view too really. 

The included S Pen stylus will be of most interest to artistic types and the input lag is exceptionally low. Pair it with that expansive screen and it can be an excellent digital canvas. The Pen itself is🍃 of a decent size🦩 and very comfortable to hold - especially compared to the stick thin stylus found on high-end Galaxy phones. It also magnetically attaches to the back of the tablet and charges there too rather than needing to be plugged in.

You can of course use the Pen to take notes if you don’t want to just type them out. It꧋’s also handy for scrawling notes and images on collaborated designs and such if you’re in that line of work. There is a feature where your handwriting can be translated into real, editable text but ✃this is still a long way from being reliable. So much so that I’d spend more time fixing it than it would have taken to just write it on the on-screen keyboard as normal. To be fair, my handwriting is absolutely awful and a day or two later I’ve no idea what I wrote half the time, so I’m willing to give Samsung a break here.

Something you might want to consider that has changed since the Tab S8 Ultra first launched, and won’t have been a thing on the original reviews, is the general user interface. When the Android 12L update rolled out, it introduced a taskbar along the bottom of the screen to make it a bit more like a laptop. The low-profile keys are excellent, responsive to the touch, and have a satisfying but subtle clicking for you to bounce off of. There’s a decent-sized trackpad on it, although I’d almost always opt for a bluetooth mouse instead unless I was traveling extra light.

The keyboard doubles up as a screen cover and a rear kickstand too. The Surface-esque kickstand is very sturdy on tables and support🐭s a strong range of angles so you can get it just right. Like Surface devices though, this thin keyboard and angled kickstand design aren’t very comfortable to use on your lap as it’s not stable enough. I can’t say that bothers me much though as I generally use a desk most of the time.

That epic 14.6-inch display is great though and bigger than the displays on the last two work laptops I’ve💮 had. If I’m having a heavy Google Sheets day (welcome to management, kids), I can get much more done without an external monitor than I can on my tiny Surface Laptop Go.

If I was keeping this review unit, I could see myself phasing out my other laptop as a lot of my work is already tied into Google’s ecosystem of apps. I rarely have to ed𝔉it images nowadays, so if your line of work mainly requires Docs, Sheets, Chrome, and Gmail, you could make a good go of it with the Tab S8 Ultra. It’s when you need somethin𒆙g else though and have to cross your fingers and toes that a) there’s an app for it on the Play Store and b) that it has a decent tablet version and not just a gross mobile-esque vertical app on screen.  

There’s undeniably a lot of power here so multitasking won’t ever be a problem, but I can’t pretend the Google Play Store supports enough apps for creatives that might be considering the Tab S8 Ultra and when you’re looking at these sort of prices, you’re more than likel💯y going to be moreಞ tempted by a MacBook Air or if you’re something of a Samsung superfan, maybe the new line of Galaxy Book 3 models which run on Windows.

For general use like browsing the web with a bit of YouTube, or standard work tasks on Chrome, Google Sheets/Docs I was getting just over nine hours of use from a single charge. General movie streaming seemed 💙to come in around the nine-hour mark too, which seems very solid.

It’s a hell of a lot of money, and if you’re buying a tablet this powerful you have to pair it up with a keyboard to get the most from it. If you’re sticking to Google’s own office apps for work tasks though, the Tab S8 Ultra is more than capable of handling it, but then again, so is a Chromebook for half the price. And yet, despite all this, it’s hard to resist the sheer size꧙ and quality of the display especia♋lly if you’re going to stream a lot of video content on it too. The overall limitations of Google’s Play Store and Dex mode mean that traditional laptops will still be the smarter choice for most users, but we’re certainly getting closer to hybrid devices like this taking the lead in the near future. 

How I tested the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra

I used the tablet for both entertainment and work on and off for a few weeks. Diablo Immortal and COD: Mobile were my main games for testing as I’ve played those titles on a range of devices and they support a wide range of visual settings. My old bedroom TV gave up the ghost recently, so I used the tablet extensively to stream TV and movie content on a table a few feet away, and the screen held up remarkably well. So much so I’d happily skip replacing the TV and just use this instead. As for work, I used the device on its own for anything that didn’t require much typing, but I mainly paired it w🎶ith the official keyboard cover and completed several full work days with this setup and also a few attaching an extra display via a dock.

However, there are a couple of slightly trickier areas of the spec sheet which impact performance, both of which arguably come with the territory in OLED land. That 1,000 nits can only be achieved in a small patch th𒉰ree percent pat🐻ch of the screen. The panel can hit 800 nits over 10 percent of the panel, 450 nits over 25 percent, and just 150 nits full screen. Hold that thought for a moment.

The other issue is the sub-pixel layout. Typical PC monitors use an RGB or red, green, and blue subpixel payout and indeed various aspects of the Windows interface, including fonts, are rendered with that assumption in mind. The Xeneon Flex. however, uses LG's typical RWBG layout, where the 'W" indicates an add💃itional white subpixel to boost brightness.

Long story short, it's subop𒉰timal for general computing, especially given the big, fat pixels that result from the relatively low resolution on such a large screen. But actually in-game or watching video, it probably doesn't matter.   

What d𝔍oes matter is the brightness problem. In darker game scenes like, say, a dingy indoor bar in Cyberpunk 2077, the Xeneon Flex looks pretty great. The neon signs behind the bar really pop, the black levels are fabulous, and there's non of the glow or halo-ing around brighter objects that you can get with mini-LED-dri🍒ven LCD monitors.

On the other hand, head outside into the brigh🥂t sunlight, and the screen just can't sustain those highs across the whole panel. Whether it's the aforementioned Cyberpunk, your favourite racing sim, shooter, or strategy title, the brighter the scene, the more disappointing the result. This monitor just isn't terribly punchy when rendering𝓰 brighter images and scenes.

With a few caveats, you can make a decent case for the Corsair Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240. It's huge, mostly very well-engineered, incredibly quick, and looks spectacular 𒉰with the right content.

Problem is, it does have to be the right content. It only really deliver♛s the full HDR experience with darker images contrasted by small bright objects. The Xeneon Flex's full-screen pop is disappointing. The low resolution isn't great when it comes to usi❀ng this screen as a conventional monitor for general computing, either. 

Then consider the fact that youღ can get a full 4K OLED TV for a lot less money and the Xeneon Flex's overall proposition is even harder to justify. Sure, a 40-something-inch TV will lack several features like USB-C and DisplayPort. It'll run at half the refresh, too. But it'll also cost half the money and that's impossible to ignore.

It's an intriguing monitor, the Corsair Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240. And it does some things very well indeed. But it's just too flawed and🌌 at around $2,000 / £2,100 too expensive to recommend.

Performance

If the spec list of the Samsung Odꦚyssey Neo G8 raises expectations, they're also tempered by the memory of the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, another epic mini-LED powered monitor that suffered from some fairly serious issues. 

For sure, the Neo G8 does some things very, very well. The pixel response is outstanding, as good as if not better than any IPS monitor. The only slightly frustrating catch is🌠 that the Neo G8 does not allow pixel overdrive and adaptive refresh at the same time, ostensibly forcing you to choose between rendering smoothness and speed. Yep, it truly is capable of stunning HDR visuals, which is not something you can say about most so-called HDR monitors. But with that capability also come problems. In SDR mode on the Windows desktop, you can see the various zones adjusting🏅 to Samsung's algorithms and generally doing odd things, lighting up parts of the display and dimming others in a slightly intrusive, clunky manner. The local dimming can be disabled in SDR mode but it's absolutely essential for HDR performance.

Now, it's true that the sense of the backlight doing clunky things is far less apparent when viewing HDR content or playing games. But in our testing, the G8 never came close to the advertised 2,000 nits. It still delivered a much punchier and more convincing HDR experience than most HDR monitors. But the reality is that even 1,196 dimming zones is rudimentary compared to a 4K OLED panel where each of its eight million pixels isꦉ individually controlled for lighting. In most regards, OLED is just a whole lot better for HDR performance.

Overall - should you buy it?

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 delights and frustrates in equal measure. That 240Hz and 4K combo is one heck of a party trick and means this is one of the few monitors that can cope with proper hair-tri🦂gger online gaming and do justice to eye candy-orientated games that thrive on lots of pixe🎶ls and true HDR capability. That's quite a package.

The problem is that even the most advanced mini-LED backlight, which is what the Neo G8 offers, is a bit clunky compared to the pꦚer-pixel lighting of an OLED panel. And when you're paying well over $1,000 / £1,000 any kind of clunkiness is hard to accept. In the end, this kind of screen tech feels like a short-term experiment while we wait for OLED or microLED to go mainstream in the monitor market. The lack of USB-C connectivity grates a little, too.

Despite all that, the Neo G8 is still a stellar gaming monitor if you want one screen to do it all -♒ PC gaming, console gaming, and some boring stuff in Windows on the side. On that note, we're not totally convinced that the curved screen really makes sense on a conventional 32-inch 16:9 monitor like this. But it's not a deal breaker either. Just a little bit of a distraction. All of this makes the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 fantastic and flawed in almost equal measure.

Design: Inline with other industry trends, the 9S Pro is more laid back in its aesthetic than previous entries. The best budget gaming phone

Picking up a cheaper gaming phone doesn't mean limiting yourself to match-three puzzlers or go with an unknown brand. The Samsung Galaxy A50 costs a small fraction of its flashier siblinꩲgs like the S20 or Note series, but this is still a great phone and a stone-cold bargain if you want to spend less, but get a phon꧟e that won't let you down.

However, we were particularly thankful for these small additions, making for a far more engaging experience overall.

The most comfortable gaming phone

The ROG Phone 7 Ultimate has even avoided software pitfalls that sometimes plague even the ꦛbest gaming phones. The Armoury Crate software neatly pulls all your games together while also serving as a hub for performance settings, framerate limits, and screen recordings. It's not unusual to find these features split across sꩲeveral different programs clogging up a gaming phone, so this sparsity is a welcome relief.

All of that makes the lofty price point all the more enticing, particularly if you're happy to invest in a high-end device. However, there is one flaw that may well stop you in your tracks. The charging USB-C port to the bottom of the phone is off-centre. It's unclear how well this will translate for those looking to play Halo Infinite or Deathloop on a virtual TV, so we'll have to wait and see for now. Xbox Cloud Gaming's Meta Quest 🃏Store launc✅h does not have a release date yet, but the announcement promises details "as soon as possible."

Meta Quest Pro has "next-generation" visuals and a $1,500 price tag.

However, these TV sales are also breaking new ground in terms of prices, and we are currently seeing a new record low on one of 2022's best. Right now the Samsung S95B in its 55-inch form is down to (was $2,199.99). Yes, this is still a fair chunk of change, but it's also the screen's first ever $500 discount - something we rarely see on a premium 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:gaming TV and so early after 🍌its release (this screen came out earlier this year).

The big selling point of this particular TV is that it is Samsung's first ever OLED TV. This would be big enough news in itself, but it's also the new iteration of OLED TV tech: QD-OLED. It certainly feels that way at first glance. But simultaneously, it also feels like something more. Something that will bring more folks in and give us more ways to play.

To cut right to it: what do you need to make it work? Well, the headline here is that the Samsung Gaming Hub will feature in all of Samsung's 2022 TVs from the entry-level Crystal UHD BU8000 line upward. This is the first noteworthy detail as it means that folks won't have to buy the most expensive Samsung contenders for 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:best TV for Xbox Series X to get the Gaming Hub. What else do you need? Well, just a Bluetooth gami♛ng controller of any stripe, and an Xbox GamePass subscr💮iption (other services are also integrated in the hub such as GeForce Now, Stadia etc - but this is clearly geared toward and built for Xbox folks).

Access to the cloud is key

The Samsung Gaming Hub offers more than just the means through which to stream games though (and this goes beyond Xbox, as apps like GeForce, Stadia and some others are accessible through it). Games streamed through the Gaming Hub can receive extra boosts such as frame-rate stabilization, optimizations, audio options, and more. You'll also be able to use normal peripherals such as headsets, the best 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Xbox Series X accessories, and wired controllers through the Bluetooth or USB conneꦉctio𝐆ns.

This move from Xbox and Samsung is without doubt primarily geared to encourage new players to try out games and Xbox Game Pass, hooking them in through this console-less method. This all sounds tremendous, so is there a downside to this service as well as the Samsung Gaming Hub? On paper,🍬 not really - but I do think there are a couple of unanswered questions, open doors, and potential opportunities.

The required internet connection is a potential pitfall - still, in the year 2022 AD. It is both not a problem for a lot of people, but is still not achievable for a lot of people. Particularly here in the UK, the reality is that there isn't quite the widespread access to reliable and sp𝄹eedy internet connections that will provide a comfortable and stable experience stream♔ing games that big companies might like to think there is. If you live in remote areas, or hard-to-reach places, then streaming will still not be an option. The Hub won't change that. 

And that's a pitfall because the Samsung Gaming Hub and Xbox App is purely aimed at getting folks into the ecosystem, or spreading them over more areas of it - there is nothing here for you if you don't stream games. This is also a potential, or at least current, problem with the Samsung Gaming Hub: all the optimizations, and extra features, are only for games streamed through it - there is nothing here for PlayStation or Nintendo players. If you were hoping that a &a⭕pos;Gaming Hub&ap♛os; might offer more than the TV's own settings for any device of any brand that you plug into it, then this is not the case.

However, the company has called it the 'Samsung Gaming Hub', not the 'Xbox Gaming Hub' or 'Xbox on Samsung Gaming Hub'. As such,🤪 maybe the door is open to it being a feature that can offer something to other platform users down the line.

This device isn’t to be confused with other foldable phones that are going for a clamshell design, opening up into a regular phone-sized device. Samsung has released one of those at the same time in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 (stay tuned for our upcoming review of that one). Instead, the Z Fold 3 opens up horizontally to reveal an almost-square 7.൩6-inch tablet-esque screen at an 11.2:9 ratio. You also get a large 6.2-inch cover 🌠screen on one half of the front side of the device too for quicker access.

The sizes of both screens haven't changed over the previous model, but the cover screen hᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚas been upgraded to match the 120Hz display seen on the main display, so it gets that lovely smooth feeling when scrolling through feeds.

As a functional display though, the cover screen is a tad too narrow to use that much - outside of quickly checking your messages, brief articles, or maybe Google Maps if you’re walking and want to hold the device one-handed. I found the cramped page layouts added way too much scroll to the experience. The compressed keyboard results in too many typos and placing the cursor first-time to edit them is too difficult. Swipe typing did fare a bit better though, so I’d advise switching to that. It’s a tough balance as we’ve seen text automatically shrunken down to accommodate narrow screens on phones like the 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Sony Xperia 1 III but in these cases, it’s oftenܫ too small. The front screen here is much narrower than Sony’s phone too.

Thankfully, in instances where I’d decide the front display wasn’t working for me, opening up the phone automatically opens the🅘 same app on the internal one for a smooth transition. And for all but the quickest tasks, you’🔴ll want to open up the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 because this is where the magic happens.

The internal tablet display

Despite being the third in the series, it’s taking a while for Samsung, and indeed app developers, to really get on board with the square screen ratio offered by the internal displays on phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. On default settings, you’ll find Facebook and many other feed-based apps try to use the full width of the screen. While all seems well initially on Facebook, I soon started to notice that long vertical images and videos (think anything shot with a phone) wouldn't quite fit. If you can see the top of a video you can forget seeing the subtitles at the other end. Tapping videos will open them up at a viewable ratio, 💜but it’s an extra interaction you might not want to make if you’re only lightly browsing videos on your feed as you scroll.

On𒀰 the plus side, all apps can be adjusted in the ‘Labs’ settings and you can choose 4:3 (narrower, but still not quite right for video cropping issues) or a much more traditional 16:9 which does fix these awkward fits. 16:9 mode does mean adding some dead space to the sides of the screen, and they really are dead. It would have been nice if you could at least use these to scroll through the feed given they’re much more in ꩵreach for your thumbs.

The ‘crease’ is still there in the center of the screen but it reaꩲlly isn’t that noticeable and has never gotten in the w🔯ay of my enjoyment reading or watching content, especially as it basically vanishes when viewed head-on with any bright backgrounds.

Flex mode -where you fold the phone halfway into an L-shape and put it on a flat surface - has a lot of potential, but is lacking polish and wide app support at the moment. For Netflix and YouTube, it moves the media controls to the bottom half and leaves the other half, the one facing you directly, to show the video content. It’s great when you’ve nothing to prop the phone up against to watch something on the whole screen. Think of a shaky table on a train, or when watching in bed. However, it recently stopped working for me on Disney Plus and it isn’t supported yet for Google Meet. Likewise for video calls on WhatsApp, but it does split nicely to half keyboard, half messages for texting. So if you like to send lඣong messages you can settle down to type almost like a proper keyboard rather than just using thumbs.

The wider display in full-screen tablet mode does excel for other apps, though. Reading articles in Chrome or going through emails is instantly better than a traditional mobile experience, even if you’re coming in from a large device like the 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra (which I am personally).

Where the device really comes alive, though, is in split view and viewing multiple apps at once. For me, running Gmail and Chrome alongside each other while holding the phone horizontally is fantastic and sometಞhing I can only usually do with a tablet - which I’m loath to drag around outside the house.

Sorting through an email backlog and being able to open their links onto the other side of the screen is a big timesaver. But you can really ramp it up as pretty much any app can be used in split view and you can even have a third open as a pop-up over the top, which is handy if you perhap𒆙s want to have controls for Spotify running on-screen at once too. The third app feels like overkill for me personally, especially in conjunction with Chrome and email, but the functionality may suit your own needs and brings the tablet experience more in line with that 🔯of iPad OS. 

What is new this year is the new taskbar. On recent Galaxy phones you might have (should have!) been using the excellent feature that lets you drag in a quick access taskbar from the edge of the screen for your favorite apps. That feature is here too, but you can now pin it to stay in place. So, if you’re working simultaneously between multiple apps you can move between them with ease. For example, I can access Chrome, Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets with a similar speed to my laptop now. Previously, I’d have to press the Menu button, then scroll through my recently opened apps each time. Now with this quick access, combined with split-view, I can get much more done at speed. And best of all, unpinning this taskbar is a swipe and a click away for when I want that screen real estate back for more casual use. My old tablet’s time is up and I don’t have to use my laptop as much. This is exactly 🧜what I want from a large foldable phone/tablet hybrid.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 cameras compared

The pinhole camera on the internal display has been replaced with a new under-display camera, which actually shoots betꦐween pixels on the screen. You can see a small mesh-like circle hiding the camera and it can be noticeable at first, but considering the system bar is usually black, you won’t see it and I soon forgot all about it when watching content. It’s an impressive ℱinnovation.

While the discretion is impressive, unfortunately, the quality of the 4MP shots from the camera hiding behind the screen is disappointing. So 🎉much so, I’d rather have the old 10MP pinhole design back. Images are much blurrier and darker than the Fold 2 and indeed most other Samsung phones. I’m not fussed about it from a selfie perspective as the 10MP lens on the cover display takes care of that, but for video calls, the internal lens got a universal thumbs down from my colleagues in various environments, with video quality being notably lower than even the basic webcam built into my work laptop. Flex mode not being supported in Google Meet is a bit annoying for using the phone half folded on a desk as well - you can still run the call, but the image of your colleagues is folded in half. That’s patchable, but the lens quality is not.

As for the three rear cameras, you’re getting a main, ultrawide, and telephoto (with 2x zoom) all at 12MP. All very good in themselves, but the S21 and modern iPhones offer better images and with stronger zoom features. But we’re only talking minor differences for most images unless you’re very serious about your phone’s camera capabilities. The modest downgrade makes sense given all the extra work the phone’s interna♚l spec is being asked to run compared to the smaller S21 series. 

What I really like about the Z Fold 3, though, is the easier functionality. Accessing the pro mode features can get a bit fiddly on a regular-sized phone, but t🐟his foldable phone gives these features and dials their own space in Flex mode. You also have the option of seeing a preview of your photo on one side of the screen without leaving shooting mode, which drastically reduces the back and forth trying to work out if you have the shot you want. Giving the in-depth pro mode controls their own space is much better for experimenting with them too. 

And that’s not all, when using the r🉐ear cameras, you can turn on the front screen so your friends can see what you’re shooting which is a neat feature for making sure everyone is in the shot and can potentially reduce the number of retakes required.

Gaming on the Galaxy Z Fold 3

The♊ expansive canvas offered by the Z Fold 3 is superb for gaming on the go with the vibrant 120hz display capable of running Call of Duty mobile on high settings with ease. Unlike a lot of flagship phones, I found the Fold 3 didn’t really heat up that much when playing. I never ran into issues with cropping either as most titles seemed fine reformatting the image without any sort of distortion or chopped content. 

It’s worth pointing out here how strong the Dolby audio is on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 as well (🐼including general music a♐nd movie playback). The dual-speaker setup supports strong bass performance and the mids and highs carry themselves nicely too, providing plenty of detail and never feeling tinny. 

FPS and racing games all felt solid on the foldable screen, but I did run into a slight issue with Sky Force, a retro-style scrolling vertical shooter. When using my finger to drag the ship around the screen, I’d sometimes briefly lose control, like I’d taken my finger off the screen, when passing over the crease. It’s far from a deal-breaker as I rarely play those types of g🉐ames now and generally prefer using a controller for Call of Duty and the like. I didn’t find the crease to cause any issues in RPG or match-three games either.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 battery test

The 4,400 mAh battery is smaller than we’ve come to expect from larger smartphones (the S21 Ultra has a 5,000 mAh battery), 🌟but you shouldn’t have a problem getting through a full day with it unless you’re really hammering some intense gaming or streaming on a lengthy commute. 

The Z Fold 3 supports 25W faꦏst charging and 10W wireless charging, but don’t expect to find a charger in the box, which is frankly ridiculous given the price, and we’re not buying the environmental excuses either. By all means, make it an optional extra and charge a few bucks less for not including one but it♉’s wrong to assume everyone has a USB-C fast charger already. 

Durability of the Z Fold 3

Unlike the previous model, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is now IPX 8 water-resistant so can survive 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. It’s impressive that Samsung has been able to produce this in the still very new world of foldable phones. There’s no rating for dust resistance though, 🐭so if you spend a lot of time on the beach, desert, or on construction sites, you might want to think twice before taking the Z Fold 3 with you. Small particles could get under the display’s surface and into the phone itself.

The new Armor Aluminum casing and hinge feel ᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚrobust enough to last with frequent use, hopefully for a few years given the cost. The ‘snap’ you ge🐲t from closing the phone feels enormously satisfying when you’re done with it too. Opening the Z Fold 3 is a little on the stiff side, though. 

Samsung claims the screen is 80% tougher than before and can withstand a huge amount of use. Having only had the phone for a month or so, we can’t attest to its longevity, but we’ve not heard any complaints from writers that have had one even longer. The glass itself is Gorilla Glass Victus, which is the top end of the scale🎐, but still glass nonetheless,🧸 so we’d implore you to pick up a decent case and save yourself some heartbreak. 

Some areas still need work

There are a few rough edges with some apps that I hope can be patched out. Running Disney Plus in Flex mode stopped working recently and refuses to split the screen appropriately between the content and controls (Netflix and Youtube run fine though). And as🍒 already mentioned, there are plenty of apps that don’t yet support Flex mode despite being a great fit for it.

Outside of Flex mode, Gmail’s quick controls at the bottom of the screen to hop into Chat, Spaces, or Meet appear on the front screen, but when you open the phone up these shortcuts often disappear meaning you’ll have to open their own bespok𝓰e apps rather than access them within Gmail. 

Bafflingly, Chrome tabs are laid out like they are on a PC browser when using tablet mode, making it difficult to navigate them if you have lots open, but when browsing via the front ꦺscreen you’re able to press a tabs button (like you can on most mobiles) and view them all from a distance, making it much easier to get back to the one you want.

As for the hardware itself, there are various elements you’d hope to see improved with future foldables. It seems greedy to ask this, but you’ll almost certainly want a lighter version as the weight here is considerable at 271g/9.8oz, and you can really feel it when you drop it into your pocket - you might find some trousers suddenly need a belt when they didn’t before. When folded, the Z Fold 3 is a thick piece of hardware. In fairness though this is only about as thick as your average flagship smartphone when🌃 unfolded, so expecting anything sꦏuper thin when folded is a big ask this early into foldable phones.

At this price, it would be nice to get the supported S Pen Fold Edition thrown in, but next time around it would be even better if a Note-esque stylus can be built-in from the off. And with the Galaxy S22 Ultra/Pro model rumored to be getting a stylus, we’ll be crossing our fingers and toes that this does inde♐ed happen with the next page of the Fold’s story.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is undeniably a tough sell at such a high price, but hopefully, it’ll come down over time. If you can get a fair deal with your network provider, though, you might be able to make it work♍. If you can, this is genuinely a game-changing piece of technology that you’ll come to adore. 

It’s a much easier sell if you’re an avid multitasker who has spent a lot of time trying to do too much with even the best inꦰ regular smartphones. That extra space of the Fold 3’s tablet screen, combined with split-view and the pinnable tas🐟kbar really opens up your options of what you can do without packing a separate tablet or turning on the laptop. And for many of us, that’s incredibly valuable and reason enough to take a pricey plunge into foldables - now that the tech has caught up with the ambition.

As shown in my Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 hands-on preview, the company is trying to cut the retail prices of this emerging tech each time around. The compact Flip 3 dips under the $1000/£1,000 barrier, while the Galaxy Fold 3 will cost you les🔯s than last year's model at $1,799/£1,599. 

Ok, that's still a huge amount of money, but we'ౠre going in the right direction. If you've got the budget to match your desire for an outrageously hot device, then the Galaxy Fold 3 might be the foldable phone/tablet hybrid you've been waiting for. That's because the tech inside the foldable display is starting to match the 𝔉kind seen in the wider flagship mobile world, and that's very exciting if you don't want to compromise on performance or features.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: what's improved? 

The displays on foldable phones just keep getting better, but Samsung is pushing the envelope this time by improving the cover screen on the Fold 3 to match the 120Hz smoothness seen on the phone's internal foldable display. You're also getting the same Dynamic AMOLED tech for improved HDR and less blue light, so when combined with the new Echo Square technology that makes both displays 29% brighter than before, everything has that extra pop to it. Providing you whac꧂k up the brightness settings, that is. 

Acc🧔ording to Won-Joon Choi, head of Flagship Product R&D Team, the durability of the flex🍷ible display has apparently been increased by around 80% compared to the previous foldables thanks to a redesigned layer structure and a new protective film on the screens. Improved scratch resistance and more durability on the folding element of the screen are big wins in my book.

Elsewhere, the Fold 3's design looks capable of taking some punishment. The metal frame of the phone, plus the hinge, is made from 10% stronger aluminium (a new material called Armor Aluꦏminium), while Gorilla Victus Glass is now being used as well. This is 50% stronger than the old Gorillas Glass 6, so the Fold 3 is a little sturdier. Even so, don't drop it, like, ever. Glass is still glass.

It's covered even if your phone goes for a dip. For the first time in the Fold series, you're protected by IPX8 technology. That’s the highest water-resistant standard 🍌you’ll find on any foldable smartphone, and it was a major sticking point on forking out fo♛r previous foldables.

Meanwhile, the new Snapdragon 888 5G processor helps alleviate concerns about power. This will provide an extra boost for all the multitasking you're going to be throwing at the Fold 3, and I was able to nip between apps with ease. The Fold 2 was very capable though, so I🍷'm confident it'll do well.

In terms of other improvements, the Galaxy Fold 3's dimensions are largely the same as the Fold 2, but it's slightly thinner in profile with less of a sloping bulk to it in the body behind the center of the screen. Similarly, I was excited to see that the selfie camera now lies under the display itself. You can see a very small mesh-like 🌠circle that's hiding the lens, but it's barely noticeable after a very short time.  

Audio h🌺asn't been ignored either, as the upgraded speakers really make that Dolby Atmos add depth to tunes 🌞on Spotify and provide a more involving soundscape for movie content.

෴Finally, the Galaxy Fold 3 now includes S Pen support, which might be an even bigger bonus for you given the Note series is taking a break this year. The S-Pen Fold Edition is a separate purchase though. If you opt for the official Samsung cover, there's a space to slot this version of the S-Pen into as well. Sure, it adds some extra bulk to the overall footprint, but given the folded phone is quite narrow anyway, the case with S-Pen at the side takes the overall width to something akin to that of the Note 20 Ultra - not bad at all and still quite pocket friendly, even with the added thickness of the folded screen. Not that you're going to fit anything else in that pocket, of course.

A multitasking beast

Splitting apps is something we've been able to do on other Samsung phones for a while, but it's often quite awkward and the usefulness can go out the window as soon as you needed to bring up the keyboard too. There are n🧸o such problems with the Fold se✅ries though, and it's even better this time around.

A new Labs feature lets you tailor the size of the app window more than before to best allow you to use them simultaneously with other apps, and you can really adapt your setup depending on the app - not to mention set behaviors in advance. There's also a new taskbar at the side of the screen that aims to cut down the number of touches require🐻d when swapping between some of your most-used apps.

Plus, you can now have 🃏two instances of the same app open at once. I'm not sure at this time if this is supported by all apps, but it'll certainly be handy for working apps like Google Docs or Microsoft Excel.

The UI has been designed to suit the extended dimensions of the internal display too. 𒁃I loved using the on-screen keyboard that was split in two to make it easier to just use my thumbs on either side of the screen to type. However, it's easy to switch to a regular keyboard layout if you prefer.

The triple camera setup on the back features three healthy 12MP lenses, while the front camera weighs in with 10MP. When taking pictures of friends with the rear camera and using the internal display to frame your shot, the front display will actually show them the same image, which is great to make sure everyone's happy and know if they're in the shot or not or how they look. A godsend if they're usually asking to🐼 retake the shot♉ for various reasons.

If you do want to tinker, diving into the camera's pro mode settings is a breeze when using the phone folded into a L-shape and putting it on a flat surface horizontally. The top half is your viewfinder, then the bottom part of the display can be used to navigate and tweak settings. It's just so much easier than tryin📖g to do it with a regular smartphone, especially something larger like a Note 20 Ultra. 

This same L-shape position is excellent for watching TV/movie content too as 𓆉even half o🐲f the screen size is large enough. The folded design will be ideal for watching content in bed without having to hold the phone or prop it up against something.

Can you justify buying one?

There's no getting around the fact that this is still an extremely expensive device. So you&🧸apos;ll really need to consider how much of a benefit it will be to your life having a phone that expands into a tablet-esque screen. One thing's clear straight away though, the Fold 3 is shaking off the feeling of it being a cool novelty concept product with a few rough edges that isn't quite ready for anyone but the keenest early adopter of the coolest tech the world can offer. Even though I only had a few hours with it, this feels like the polished final product I wanted the first two Folds to be.

If you're regularly on the move and are tired of traveling with a smartphone and a tablet, especially if you're paying extra for a data SIM on that tablet to stay online, then the Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 could be a smart investment especially as a productivity tool that ✃doubles up as a device with a decent camera and entertainment features. In addition, the displays have improved and t🐻he IPX8 rating adds some assurance against a slight drizzle or leaky drink in your bag, while the enhanced durability of the display means it should keep you going for a good few years.

The Flip 3 is less expensive than expected, particularly compared to th𒆙e Fold 3 - that one's still a seriously pricey phone at $1,699/£1,599. By contrast, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 comes in at $999/£949. Far from what I'd call cheap, but that's still less than what you would have paid at launch for some favorite flagship phones like the Note 20 Ultra, S21 Ultra, or iPhone Max Pro. Plus, you're getting something much more unique here. This phone is much more impressive than the previous Flip when opened up.

An incredibly versatile set of display options

For a start, there's a rather stunning 120Hz display, which is double the refresh rate of the previous model. With the old phone, it felt like you were paying a premium for the foldable tech, and then losing out a little on the phone itself, but that's no longer the case. Now we're getting that smooth scrolling experience we've come to expect over the last couple of years when using any flagship Samsung/OnePlus device (I'm still baffled at the iPhone sticking with 60Hz). It feels like you wouldn't be making a compromise by taking the plunge on the Galaxy Flip 𝔉3.

The resolution hasn't changed, but the HDR performance has - we're getting a Dynamic AMOLED display over a Super AMOLED one, which is capable of a wider range of colors and with less 🍸blue light emission too. That means it's better for your eyes.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a 6.7-inch internal display again, but the bezel around it has been greatly reduce꧙d. So much so that the phone its𒆙elf is slightly smaller than last time around.

The phone's edges have been rounded off a bit more as well, so I found the phone quite slippery in the hand, as most modern phones are, so it's certainly going ꧋to need a case to avoid getting 🧸dropped. Especially if you're going to try and open it one-handed like you might have done with an old Motorola Razr.

That's because it's surprisingly stiff to open one-handed. However, the resistance on the hinge now allows for a wider choice of viewing angles when you put the pho♔ne down, which is much b♍etter for video calls.

The crease in the center of the screen is still there though, and I think it's going to be a🌸 year or two until Samsung works out that particular wrinkle. But in all honesty? I barely noticed it. When the screen goes black it's at its most noticeable, but I stopped seeing it when navigating menus or browsing on Chrome. It's not that distracting to the touch either, and with it being in the ce🌳nter it won't be much of an issue as the lower third of the screen is where most touches and swipes take place.

Wh🐬en folded halfway into an L-shape,✃ the Flip 3 is great for video calls or lining up photos. The display will change automatically if you're watching video content and while very small, if you have it on a table nearby, it's very watchable for short content on a break or commute.

The redesigned front cover display shows much more information as well - it offers a 1.9-inch screen that’s four times bigger than the previous model. It’s ♕still fairly s𝓡mall, but large enough to comfortably display track information on Spotify, show a WhatsApp message, or even scroll through a longer email. In short, there’s much more you can do now without even opening the phone up at all. 

Small yet mighty

The Samsung Galaxy Flip 3 has plenty to consider beyond those impressive displaꦏy features, of course. So let's quickly round up a few other specs and features before we get our hands on a review uni𒉰t to test more extensively.

The selfie camera is a respectable 10MP, which makes for high-quality video calls too. And if you use the video call app, Google Duo, the camera automatically zooms in and out to fit you in the frame or allow more people to join in next to you. Again, that L-shape mode is great for quick calls and not having to hold the phone during or prop it up against something (because they always fall over when I try to do this).

The main camera isn't bad either. If you’re spending close to a grand on a phone, foldable or not, you really want to see a great main camera on the p🍸hone too, and the 12MP snapper on the back is happy to oblige. I was limited to testing it in a well-lit demo area, so I'll hold off a full verdict on the cameras until I can get it out in the wild and test it in the dark too, but so far so good. There was ಌplenty of rich detail and reasonable zoom performance on display.

You don't need to worry about taking snaps near water, either - the Flip and Fold 3 are set to become the first foldable phones with IPX8 rating for water resistance, which instantly make꧋s them more appealing as a pricey phone with one l♌ess vulnerability.

Prime portability

The colors available for the Flip 3 feel 🍌fairly muted, but that seems to be the trend across the brands right now on most flagships. Phantom Black, Green, Lavender, and Cream will be available at your usual mobile phone retailers, but the White, Pink, and Gray will be Samung.com exclusives. Of the ones I had a look at, the lavender and cream models seem to be the standouts.

Samsung will be selling a wide selection of specially-designed folding covers to pick up alongside your new phone, and the palette he🌠re offers some much-needed punch. If you like the look of the phone already, clear covers will be available too.

Unlike the Fold 3 series, which sees a regular phone fold out into a tablet, the Flip 3's charm lies in it fold༺ing into a much more compact square design then folding out into something akin to one of today's larger phones. It really is tiny when folded and doesn't feel too thick either, although if you keep your phone and wallet in the same pocket you might find it's a bit more of a squeeze. But if you're popping it into a pocket solo, a handbag, or super small clutch, you'll absolutely adore it. 

After getting my hands on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 for a few hours, it's beginning to look like the foldables market might just have a chance at breaking through sooner than we thought. Sure, the bigger Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 might be the device that has me drooling more as we chase that futuristic horizon (just give me that foldable tablet from Westworld, already damnit!), but the Z Flip 3 is much more♊ affordable (relatively speaking that is) and comes with enough unique features to be genuinely useful beyond the cool factor of having a foldable phone.

The newly-named Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is the follow-up to the Watch 3 from last year and, aesthetically, is pretty simi🤡🧔lar to that model. Namely, it features that chunky, rotating bezel design we’ve come to know and love. This will be priced from £359.

The other model, simply called Samsung Galaxy Watch 🉐4, looks very different - it loses the rotating bezel and large metal fꦅrame. It's a lighter, cleaner design with a much more discrete finish than its pricier counterpart. Prices for this model start at just £259.

With a price difference like that, you'd be forgiven for thinking one would be a significantly watered-down version. Maybe with less power, features, and storage. H🎉owever, you'd be wrong. The internal spec of the cheaper Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 matches that of the newly-dubbed Galaxy Watch 4 Classic at every turn. You’re just getting that thicker chassis with a rotating bezel on the latter.

Instead of a rotating bez𝄹el to navigate the menus, you can slide your finger around the edge of the screen to navigate in a similar manner. It’s not as immediate as the bezel, but it works well e🍎nough. The screen will inevitably end up with more smudgy fingerprints though.

And while I’d argue you’re paying quite a lot extra for that feature, the bulkier design has another advantage beyond nailing that traditional watch feel - protection. For some reason, I’m almost constantly catching the edge of my Galaxy Watch 3 against surfaces, tables, door edges, the lot. With the sturdy surrounding bezel and metal frame around the watch itself, I've fortunately avoided damaging𓆏 the screen glass. I’ve not even seen any dings or scratches in the metal either, so I’d assume the Watch 4 Classic will be able to withstand my accidental bashings too. 

As for the much more open design of the Watch 4, I’d be very concerned for the exposed screen, much like I am with all the Apple Watches out there with curved glass going around the edge of the display. That being said💝, I'm sure there's a lot of you out there that aren&🐈apos;t utter clutzes and are capable of walking through a door without bashing your watch.

The OS upgrade we've been looking for?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series answers the call for a much-needed new operating system along with some new UI enhancements, as the last few watches have all felt too similar. The new Wear OS has been built jointly w💫ith Google and it is now compatible with the proper Google Play store.

This is a big deal. Now when you download apps on your phone, you’ll see an option to download any relevant versions to your watch too rather than having toও dow𝔍nload apps from the rather slim pickings of the Samsung store via a separate app.

More to the point, we’re finally, finally getting proper Google Maps support on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 with an on-screen map and directions at the same time. The built-in compass seems to help point you in the right direction in real-time too. If you’ve tried navigating while walking around a new city using third-party apps on the older Galaxy Watches, this alone might be a reason to upgrade. We might finally be able to leave our phone in our pocket and see where we're supposed to be going. I never really trust relying on just audio directions over Bluetooth, especially when there's a long pause between directions only to find it's stopped 💛tracking your movements when you do 🐻take a look. So yes, I'm very much ready to put this to the test properly.

You’ll want to pack the apps into the watch too as they’re much easier to browse on the watch itse🌺lf now. Simply swipe up and you can scroll through a long vertical list of icons. Sure, it’s a feature lifted from Apple Watches, but straight away I found ♌it much better than cycling through the usual menus to find the app I want.

Tech boost

Storage has been doubled to 16GB this year, which is nice to have, especially with the additional apps we might want to download. They're not going to be huge files though, and even 8GB allowed for a�💝� lot of downloaded Spotify songs. 

In additio𝔍n, both Galaxy Watch 4 models come with a 20% increase in CPU and 50% increase in RAM which should ensure smoother scrolling and multitasking. Although we’ll have to live with the watch for a while to really see what difference this🍸 makes day-to-day, I experienced zero stuttering and everything loaded fast enough during my hands-on session. 

Even the screen resolution has had a mild bump, now with 10% more pixels. ꦯThis results in smoother transitions and scrolling.

It's not all rosy, though. Battery life is reported as lasting up to 40 hours, which is less than the two days plus we’re able to get from our (45mm) Watch 3 by around half a day. Perhaps the slightly slimmer design is why there's a smallerꦬ battery. Unless it's the same si🙈ze, but the new OS is more of a drain.

On the other hand, this still comfortably beats the charge time seen on the latest Apple Watch models whic✤h last around 18 houꦅrs. You're looking at around two hours to recharge the Watch 4 from flat, too.

Stylish new straps

It&a🌳pos;s worth mentioning the new strap that comes with both models. Instead of leather, there's a synthetic rubber strap this time around. But don't pull that face. Yes, a lot of rubber straps have that horrible finish that sticks to your skin and pulls at wrist hair, but this feels much more breathable and with a soothingly smooth finish that's much better than the strap on something like the Gear Sport.

This does mean the default leather strap seen on the Watch 3 has been replaced, but given the increasing number of fitness features on the Watch 4 (more on those below), it's clear Samsung is gearing the watch towards using it for exercise more. The leather ba❀nd wasn't great for getting your sweat on, after all.

However, you can still have the best of both. There is a new optional watch strap sold separately with a cool two-tone design - leather on one side, then this smooth rubber material on the skin-contacting side. So you get ꦅto hit the gym and wear it out to dinner in style, too. Hopefully, this won't be too expensive as it looks like a genuinely attractive accessory. Not that the rubber strap looks unattractive.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is gunning for your Fitbit

Samsung is leaning even harder on the fitness angle this time around, ♒with a new body composition analysis tool looking to provide one of the most comprehensive fitness smartwatches on the market. And given the Apple Watch has been going much the same way in recent times, I imagine Fitbit will be increasingly concerned about losing mar🌜ket share.

To run a ‘scan’ for the body composition tool, you simply enter your height and weight, then hold two buttons. This allows the watch to send a very mild c🌱urrent through your body to provide results on body fat and the like. Yep, it’s basically witchcraft.

Expect to find other features as seen in lastဣ year's model too like blood oxygen and bloo💙d pressure monitoring, in addition to a heart-rate monitor.

I was unable to test other exercise features during my hands-on session, but I'm hoping for some improved performance from the gyroscope compared to the Watch 3. I found the latter a bit lethargic on responses to stretches as it would often ignore the first handful of squats or twists when I’d react to the (optional) hourly prompts for a quick🤪 stretch or two when sitting in a chair all day. Hopefully, the Watch 4 has fired the little animated chap saying ‘Great!’ when I got up to make a brew though - the sarcastic little asshat.

Should you pre-order the Galaxy Watch 4?

The 🍃new Galaxy Watch 4 series looks to be making a range of neat improvements. I am geeking out on Google Maps properly coming to a smartwatch. And while the lack of a rotating bezel and thick frame might make the Watch 4 more vulnerable to clumsy clashes than the Watch 4 Classic, that low price is incredibly appealing.

All four ওHDMI inputs provided are v2.1 certified and support 4K 120Hz video from PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. There’s also ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) on board, with eARC available on HDMI 3 for connection to soundbars and external audio systems. Also provided is an optical digital audio output, three USB connectors, and Ethernet. Wireless support covers Bluetooth v4.2 and Wi-Fi, with Apple Airplay 2 compatibility.

There’s no significant change to Tizen, Samsung’s smart TV platform. Apps and smart functionaliꦑty are still accessed via the launcher ribbon that runs across the bottom of the screen. Samsung’s menus can be a bit labyrinthine, but the Game Bar is a dedicated interface for simplifying tweaks and adjustments. You can select a custom aspect ratio (21:9 or 32:9), monitor HDR and input lag, and so on. The latency is good: we measured input lag at 10.1ms (1080/60), in the standard Game mode. Performance

The QN95A deserves its Neo QLED moniker. What we’re seeing here, courtesy of that Mini-LED backlight, is something entirely new for LED TVs, eclipsing the performance of even posh FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) models. The backlight module has been co💛mpletely reimagined. With 𒀰some 792 Mini LED zones at work, the screen presents a tonally uniform and aggressively bright display.

The QN95A also utilises Samsung’s most advanced image processor. The Quantum 4K processor with multi-intelligence deep learning has 16 times the capacity of its predecessor to optimise video processing. Small wonder it looks so good when upsca✨ling HD sources to 2160p.

HDR support covers HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+ Adaptive, the latter an update of the HDR10+ dynamic metadata standard, which uses the TV light sensor t♍o manage HDR. But there isn't a provision for Dolby Vision, which is careless given that Samsung has partnered with Xbox, and only Xbox is rolling out Dolby Vision HDR games. Overall though, the set’s HDR performan🧸ce is terrific. We measured peak brightness on the Standard image preset with local dimming on a default Standard setting, at 1300 nits. You can coax even more from the panel if you set Local Dimming on High. This means the screen doesn’t have to aggressively tone map content mastered with a 1000 nits ceiling (which is the broadcast standard).

There’s a host of image presets available, but we s♊uggest sticking with the Intelligent Mode, which really brings out⛦ the best in the set.

The TV boasts an excellent black level performance, presenting letterbox bars in solid black rather than grey, with a greatly reduced chance of blooming around bright 💞objects.

What constantly catches the eye is the superlative detail, however. A run-through of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on the PS5 is a visual revelation. The texture of Spidey’s costume looks almost tangible. Exquisite pin-pricks of light enliven Peter Parker’s eyes. Similarly, the sunlit NTC vis🍨tas are spectacular, if often startlingly bright. Indeed, this is the best bright room LED TV you can buy right now. It maintains pop, colour and contrast even in rooms with high levels of ambient light.

Intelligent Mode also helps audio, adding weight and impact. The TV actually uses eight speakers, including two up high on the rear, for its Object Tracking Sound system.
