Set in a small town in rural China in the mid-'90s, Only the River Flows follows police chief Ma Zhe (Zhu Yilong) as he investigates a series o🌞f murders. Zhe is your standard noir cop – he's good at his job, spends most of his screentime looking increasingly dejected in a leather jacket, and chain-smokes cigarettes non-stop.

The China of Only the River Flows is also typical noir territory, set against a backdrop of grey, gloomy weather and equally gloomy surroundings, filmed in grainy, flickering 16mm. A cassette tape of mysterious messages recorded for an unknown recipient found inside an abandoned handbag at the crime scene propels Zhe down a dogged path in search of the truth, which takes him deeper and deeper into the local community. Every time he thinks he's made a breakthrough in the case, however, the body count grows, with seemingly no link between victims except their violent demises and the fact they've been subject to Zhe's questioning. When an arrest is finally made, the detective can't seem to accept that this is how it all ends. But are things more straightforward than they appear?

The movie opens with an Albert Camus quote filling the screen: "There&🐟apos;s no understanding fate, therefore I choose to play the part of fate," it reads. "I wear the foolish, unintelligible face of a professional god." Zhe's search for meaning in the string of riverside murders is driven by a desperate need to make sens🙈e of otherwise senseless violence and death. He trawls the town's streets and questions suspects and witnesses with tireless determination, to the point where the work becomes all-consuming. The case follows him home, affecting his relationship with his pregnant wife, which only intensifies his need for truth. All of this has to be worth something, right?  

We don't want to spoil anything, but there are no big๊ twists or reveals in Only the River Flows. The film confronts both our perverse desire for salacious crime stories and our need for logical conclusions. Zhe is rewarded for his work on the case, but he doesn'tꦛ want praise or recognition. There's no glory in this, the film seems to be telling us. By subverting what we expect from this kind of movie, it's emphasizing that no one wins here – not Ma Zhe, not the victims, not the perpetrator. And not the viewer, either.

Speaking at a event, the Oscar-nominated director has confirmed his long-awaited Heat 2 is next. "Yes, Meg Gardiner and myself wrotℱe the novel Heat 2, which came out 🎶right when we were shooting Ferrari," he said of the upcoming follow-up. "It did very well. I plan to shoot that next."

Mann’s Heat 2 is based on the novel he wrote with Gardiner that a🗹cts as both a prequel and a sequel to the original 1995 film. According to a new interview with , Warner Bros. asked Scorsese if one of the two main characters in the film, an undercover cop played by Leonardo DiCaprio and a mob boss spy in the police force played by Matt Damon, could survive theꦗ end of the film in order to appear in further sequels.

Driver is in talks to play a younger version of Neil McCauley, the character played by Robert DeNiro in the original 1995 movie. Total Film: How did you find the character of Brian Brown-Easley in Breaking? You seem to inhabit him from the inside out…

John Boyega: The first thing I started off with was talking to Abi [Damaris Corbin, writer and director] about what story she wanted to make, and reading the script like it was a bible. And then we were lucky enough to have CCTV footage. It’s 💃very rare to have full footage of the character you’re playing. Not in highlight moments, like if you’re doing a biopic and you watch a concert or the most monumental, historic moments of their life. With this, I got to see [it all].

What struck you immediately?

The first thing that I noticed was that this was a bank robber who didn’t have the same violent approach that most felt like they needed to have. He was🌺n’t frantic, he wasn’t shouting. There was a nuance there that I had to capture. I shaved my head, and put on these glasses and made sure that the walk was sui🐻ted to what I know of Brian. I also was lucky because I got the phone conversations that went on between the negotiator and Brian. I got to learn the tone of his voice, the specifics of his accent.

Did you just go at it as a real-life story, or did you look at any bank-robbery films, like Dog Day Afternoon or 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Inside Man?

I never go back and waꦚtch movies for any performance that I do. It always comes from the internal and then through a collaboration between myself and the director and the rest of the crew and the team. And this being such a unique situation, I couldn’t refer to any other movie to guide me; this was a real person to have respect for, what they lived and what they experienced.

This, sadly, was Michael Kenneth Williams’ final performance. All of your scenes are negotiating over the phone. Did you actually get to meet him?

Yeah. One of the creative processes that Abi introduced was that when we were doing scenes on the phone, we’d have the other actor there, reading the lines. It was very, very helpf✤ul. We had to write to Michael to get him in on the project, so we’d been in communication earlier. I met him when he first came on set and we had a lot of time to bond, speaဣk, talk about all the things we were trying to achieve in the scenes.

Were you a fan of The Wire?

Oh yes! Absolutely. Abi came up to me and said, "We don’t know who we’re going to cast yet, and we don’t know who is going to say 'yes' – it’s not like we have loads of money to offer them – but what do you think of Michael K. Williams?" I was like, "Wait, what? Omar fucking Little? Boardwalk Empire? Like, fuck, yeah! Tellꩲ him to come and join us, if he has the time." And he with op🤪en arms was like, "I’ve read the script and I was very much moved by it."

Scorsese's latest film, Personality Crisis: One Night Only, a documentary that follows the life of David Johansen, lead singer-songwriter of 1970s glam punk band the New York Dolls, premiered this week at the New York Film Festival (where he had some c𓄧hoice words about the movie-goer fixation on box office numbers).

This fact/fiction tale begins in New York in 1933, with Great War veteran Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale) practising experimental medicine to aid his fellow vets. His old war pal Harold Woodman (⭕John David Washington), now an attorney, turns up with news that General Bill Meekins (Ed Begley Jr.) is dead. Their former leader was murdered, suspects the General’s daughter, Liz (Taylor Swift), and the trio set about pilfering the corpse to perform an autopsy.

The intrigue widens to take in detectives, politicians, big business, American and English intelligence agents (Mike Myers all but resurrects Austin Powers). There’s also General Gil Dillenbeck (Robert De Niro, again turning it on for Russell in their fourth collaboration), who fights for the rights of America’s veterans, many of them people of color. We also spin back to 1918 to discover how Burt and Harold became friends with pipe-smoking n𓆏urse Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie), who reappears in ’33 to help her old friends in their investigation.

Amsterdam will not win over Russell’s detractors, whose feelings towards his convoluted plotting, untidy digressions, seesawing mood shifts and wild clash of sincerity and cynicism can be summed up with the eye-roll emoji. All of the above is here, along with a running gag of Burt losing his glass eye. But for those un-irked by the quirk of I ❤ Huckabees and 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:American Hustle – who are not infuriated but exhilarated by Russell’s energy as he tears up the 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:(Silver Linings) playbook – Amsterdam offers much to enjoy.

For starters, there’s everything the detractors loathe. And then you’ve got the handsome costumes, sump💧tuous production design, Emmanuel Lubezki’s bronze-and-chestnut photography… plus charismatic performances from the ludicrously starry cast, w𒁃hich also includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Michael Shannon, Rami Malek, and Zoe Saldana. The film also has things to say about today’s divided world.

It&apo꧟s;s a rocky, at times patience-testing ride that plays 🅰something like a screwball riff on The Plot Against America, but Amsterdam is ultimately worth the trip.

According to , De Niro will star in Wise Guys, a new film penned by Nicholas Pileggi. He wrote the (unrelated) book Wiseguy, which Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas was based upon. Rain Man director Barry Levinson will helm the film, which is planned for a theatrical release. Goodfellas and💟 Rocky producer Irwin Winkler is onboard as a producer. 

Wise Guys will focus on two crime bosses, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, who were active in the 20th century (the film will be a period piece). Costello was a boss of a major crime family, but in 1957, Genovese tried to have him killed – though Costello survived, he was wounded, and he eventually ceded power to Genovese and retired. The family is now🎶 known as the Genovese crime fa♌mily, one of the "Five Families" of the New York City Mafia. THR's sources indicate that De Niro will be playing both Costello and Genovese, which is certainly a unique twist to the tale. 

De Niro is no stranger to a gangster epic: his credits in the genre include Goodfellas, The Godfather 2, Casino, and 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:The Irishman. He's working with frequent collaborator Scorsese once again for Killers of the Flower Moon, which is 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:expected in 2023, and also stars Leona𝔉rdo DiCaprioꦅ, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Gladstone.

In the clip, which can be viewed above, Chris Rock's character finds a dead white man in a box an🅘d says to Christian Bale, "Who do you think is going to get in trouble for that? The Black guy." The film's tagline, "A lot of this actually happened," suggests that the film is loosely based on a true story wi✅th the trio uncovering "one of the most shocking secrets in American History." initially reported that the film was inspired by the FBI Abscam sting operation of the late 1970s and early 1980s that led to the conviction of seven United States Congress members, though we'll just have to see how this fits into the 1930s setting.
