Stepping back into Elden Ring where I left off – Raya Lucaria Academy and the fringes of the surrounding Lakes – with rusty skills, no found ma🌼p, no guidance (this is a walkthrough-free zone, thank you very much), and a hostile world of gruesome creatures and Lovecraftian monstrosities that want to kill me at every turn didn't exactly fill me with joy.

As I inched towards the exterior of the cavernous buildings, I was met by a true jump-scare. A Runebear – a Lesser one, to my embarrassment – thrust its claws into me and left me sh𒀰orn of Runes and my shame. I'm not sure I'll ever return to the underside of that bridge.

But then it dawned on me: Elden Ring is meant to scare me. I'd even go one further and say it's at its best when it's a full-blown nightmare. My earlier hours, too, were packed with spine-chilling moments that dwarfed my return's ursine-shaped terror. The Ulcerated Tree Spirit slashing at me in an optional first dungeon when I was hopelessly out of my depth; the sneaky, iconic chest switcharoo that dumped my Tarnished in unfamiliar territory close to Caelid in the openi🌠ng minutes; whatever Godrick the Grafted is supposed to be. It all painted a picture of a world that didn't want me there or wanted me dead. Neither did much good for𓄧 my nerves.

The secret to Elden Ring's success, then, isn't that it's a heroic adventure or a power fantasy. Instead, it's a war of attrition; FromSoftware's open-world masterpiece is a brutal struggle, one wherꦏe you're constantly on the back foot and never want to 🐽see what's around the corner.

Reign over me

Which brings me to A24's Elden Ring movie adaptation. There has been plenty of discussion already about what the big-screen take should look like, with a particularly vocal sub-section of fans 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:pining for a story based on Vyke, the Tarnished who came cl🗹osest to taking on the mantle of Elden Lord before the player's character rocked up to Th﷽e First Step with naught but a wing, a prayer, and a Site of Grace's light to follow.

Rise of the Beast

Garland's less celebrated work as co-writer on the criminally underrated Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and 2013's divisive Devil May Cry quasi-reboot already suggests he can appeal to a range of players, while understanding how the environment – as is the case in Enslaved's grassy world reclaimed by nature – can very much act as a secondary character in the same way Caelid's scorched skies or the brutal, enclosed architecture of Stormveil Castle's grounds wi🔜ll live long in my memory.

In truth, I would be disappointed if Elden Ring is a 1:1 adaptation or a similar analogue to the Tarnished's journey towards the Elden Beast. I also don't think gamers are necessarily content with straightforward adaptations anymore. They've been there, played that. The likes of Sonic, Minecraft, and Mario have proven to be triumphs by using their s♍ource materials as a launchpad for adaptations that realize the leap from consoles to cinemas requires transformation, not merely treading the same ground.

Similarly,ꦐ a heavier horror twist on Elden R♏ing offers something different – a journey through game director Hidetaka Miyazaki's suffocating saga that taps into something I've been too scared to admit until now: Elden Ring is not-so-secretly a horror game, and it deserves a movie to match.

This led to a sense of urgency and full🥀y kicked off the action that we see ꦗin Fellowship as Gandalf returned to the Shire to inform Frodo on his next steps, the Ringwraiths entered the Shire, and a bunch of Orcs allowed Gollum to escape his prison.

Naturally, it proves to be more than what the monster hunter bargained for as he's drawn into a centuries-oౠld conflict between humans and merpeople that shows no sign of abating.

It's a great premise, and one that feels particularly suited to this mode of storytelling. South Korean animation studio, Studio Mir – who previously worked on The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf – has great fun depicting the underwater, fantastical world. Th🌼e desig🤪n of the merpeople is particularly beautiful, blending blue and purple tones to create something quite visually arresting.

This lean deeper into monsters and fantasy is something that the best episodes of the live-action series did too. Focusing on a small, contained story, rather than a heavy reliance on ongoing conflicts reminds m♏e of some of its best episodes, like s🐼eason 2's opener 'A Grain Of Truth' or season 1's 'Rare Species'. Yet, here there is even more time to delve deeper into both the story itself and the backstories of our beloved protagonists.

Character study

Jaskier in particular gets a lot more to tackle, and we find out some interesting details about his past. While we won't venture into spoilers, it's a real joy to learn more about him, especially because Batey and his musical character remain a real high point of Netflix's take on the world of The Witcher. Geralt too gets some growth with the memories of his relationship with Yennefer (voiced by the returning Anya Chalotra) plaguing his every decision. This is particularly interesting when b🔯rought into contrast by new love interest, Essi Daven.

Daven is a fascinating character, with links to Jaskier's past as well as being a refreshing new heroine inℱ The Witcher franchise. Voice actor Christina Wren does bring warmth to the character, but sadly it's a performance weighed down by a distracting accent that makes it hard to follow her narrative at times. As the film progresses, it evens out a bit, but unfortunately 🦂a barrier remains for audiences to truly engage with her story.

It's not just Daven's accent which hampers the film either, but s🐭ome of the action seqꦫuences don't flow as well as you would hope. While the animation is wonderful at capturing the unique world of The Witcher, it gets a bit clunky in fast-paced scenes which can't hold a candle to some of the incredible fight sequences of its live-action counterpart.

Full of potential

Yet, if you're able to look past these quibbles, t🌺here's a lot to like about The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. It remains an enjoyable watch throughout thanks to its pacy, well-woven storytelling that broadens the lives of famili♏ar characters while exploring previously untouched areas of Sapkowski's world. Director Kang Hei Chul does a stellar job, and props go to writers Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin who understand the delicate balance of a standalone tale that fits into an existing narrative.

All this is anchored by Cockle's impressive handling of Geralt, which will feel nostalgic for The Witcher 3 fans and will hopefully introduce a whole new audience to his deft genius at playing the monster hunter. Quintessentially, the animation feels like a breath of fresh air in T🃏he Witcher's increasingly controversial franchise – and it's enough to make you wonder that if while the future of The Witcher live-action may be limited, cut down from its original seven-season plan to just five, anime could be where it finds its future.

Considering how the original film ended, with Sarah looking into her mirror at home and seeing the creatures from the labyrinth dancing around her bedroom, it is clear that the veil between both worlds has not been closed. So, with how much time has pas🍰sed, it would make sense for Sarah’s daughter to look into that same mirror and somehow be pulled into that other world, then facing the same journey her mother did.

Much like the cult favorite 1999 TV movie Alice in Wonderland where Alice visits an alternate Wonderland different from what we see in Disney’s version, Eggers' new Labyrinth movie could show the maze in a new light, decades after Sarah fi꧑rst visited its cobbled path. Who knows, maybe tim🍌e has not been kind to the labyrinth and it has turned into an even scarier place.

More goblins, ghouls, and petrifying puppets

But with no David Bowie, there is no Goblin King. The iconic musician simply cannot be replaced and so the new heroine’s (or hero’s) journey will be a little bit different. This is where Eggers's signature gothic touch can come in. Without the Goblin King to rule over it, I expect the Labyrinth t♊o become lawless and hostile, kind of like in Mad Max or Silent Hill, where the strange surviving inhabitants are living as they please, causing carnage in a dark new world. The heroine’s walk through the new almost post-apocalyptic-like labyrinth, where the goblins and creatures have become rabid, will visit familiar spots and show how different the maze has become without any order.

Eggers is no stranger to taking already bizarre and offbeat worlds, making them even darker. His 2015 movie The Witch takes your average The Crucible-style witch trial tale and makes it even more nightmarish by including forest-dwelling baby-eating witches, whilst the filmmaker’s most receꦛnt release Nosferatu is perhaps the most chilling Dracula adaptation I have ever seen, thanks to Eggers' bold choice to present The Count as a rotting corpse rather than the handsome, seductive figure we are used to seeing with vampires. In this respect, I don't think the director wi🔯ll have any trouble turning the horror up a notch with Labyrinth.

All in all, I think Eggers has proved that he can handle adapting well-loved tales with care by putting his own spin on things, so I am more than excited to see what he makes of one of the best fantasy movies ever made. I just hope he keeps💜 the puppets.
