Coming from , casting is underway for Ted Lasso's big return, and among the roles is 12-year-old Henry, who we last saw running to meet his dad in Kansas at the end of season 3. And we wanted to, you know, build a friendship over these seasons [and for] Johnny Lawrence to finally have that redemption, to get him back on that red mat where he's able to exercise the demons from the past."

Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) finally gets his happy endiꦅng - and I think any lifelong fan of the franchise will agree that it's the perfect way for the show to go out. Before the emotional finale, Johnny finally gets to confront his former sensei Kreese (Martin Kove) about the traumatic event that takes place in The Karate Kid 2, after he loses his fight to Daniel LaRusso (Johnny Lawrence). The two make up, and it's a beautiful moment. Little does Johnny know, however, that this will be the last time he and Kreese will ever s🍨ee each other.

While Kreese has his epic change of heart, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) does not. The two battle it out on a yacht and, in true Terry fashi𒆙on, he goes out a villain - evil to the very end.

"You know, the boat explosion. We knew that with Terry and Kreese that we wജere headed to an explosive conflict between them. And we thought that was the most dramatic way to go out: with Sensei Kreese finally stepping up in the ways that he hadn't in the past for Johnny in the most dramatic way possible."

It was something that we communicated - the possibilities of her being a part of it. The 𓃲long story short is it wasn't going to happen. As writers and creators, there's no guarantees of anything."

The fourth film in the Karate Kid franchise saw Mr꧃. Miyagi take on Julie as his new protege in a new state - though it wasn't exactly loved by critics at 😼the time. The film has since become a cult classic.

"When we entered into Cobra Kai, we weren't guar🦹anteed that Thomas Ian Griffith was gonna return to acting or anything. So, you hope for things and then yo♊u find out what the reality is and then you make the best story. Our hope is that there's more Karate Kid stories in the future. There's more opportunities to see Julie Pierce maybe in a different iteration or story. But it wasn't gonna happen with this season."

"Iꦜ think what I love about the end of the series is it really feels like a big '80s Karate Kid movie, like a really good Karate Kid movie with all the feels, cheers, tears, the 'F yeah!' moments." Macchio tells GamesRadar+. "I remember seeing [the first film] for the first time in a theater, and people came out of their seats and were high-fiving their neighbors, and people they never met before. And at the end of the show, you kind of still feel that, albeit through a Cobra Kai lens."

"It has the signature that the Cobra Kai series has crꦕeated, but it never leaves the themes of what the Karate Kid was," Macchio continues. "And I'm really glad it landed that way. And these g🔜uys did a beautiful job. John, Josh, and Hayden really did."

🌳You might remember that The Karate Kid, which෴ first hit theaters in 1984, sees Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) go up against misguided bully Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) in an intense karate tournament under the sensei-ship of a one Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita).

Cobra Kai, which takes place some 40 years after the first movie, instead s🀅ees Daniel and Lawrence open up dueling karate dojos – though it doesn't take long for the two to put decades-old differences aside and become best friends.

At the end of the first movie, Daniel gets his big moment: defeating Johnny in the tournament. At the end of Cobra Kai, Johnny gets his – and defeats Sensei Wolf (Lewis Tan) in the tie-breaking fina🍸l round of the Sekai Taikai (I promise you will cry your eyes out).

"I think, when you're wrapping up a giant karate soap opera that we've been on a six-season journey with, there's so many characters that you want to tie up, and from the very beginning, we would take some episodes and highlight certain characters and others," showrunner John Hurwi🌳tz tells GR+. "We took the approach of, in the final five episodes, not trying to tie everything up all at once in one episode, but spread it throughout, give everyone their big, climactic moment."

Every character does, indeed, get their big climactic moment through🌳out the final five episodes – with even Chozen from The Karate Kid 2 getting his own happy ending. Franchise villains Terry Silver and John Kreese definitely get an ending... but we wouldn't call it happy. Luckily, Johnny gets his well-deserved moment with Kreese, some 30 years in the making, as well as one final, beautiful moment with Daniel that echoes back to the first movie.

Continues Hurwitz: "That's one of the reasons why we wanted to do 15 episodes in our final season, so that we had the real estate to spend a little bit of time, and we definitely wanted to finish where we started with Daniel and Johnny as the two main characters that we spent the most time on in the early couple of episode꧅s."

"That's been the gift that keeps on giving with this, being involved in this film franchise and this series and everything else. To have 8-year-old kids and 80-year-old grandparents all enjoying a piece of this, of this story over these years and gaining different things from it, whether it be nostalgia or new relevant s🎃tories going forward, it's always been positive," Macchio adds. "It's always aboඣut overcoming obstacles, wish fulfillment, aspirations, storytelling, mentorship. It's a genuine, big, fat, warm embrace and in a world that isn't always warm and embracing. So I really feel blessed, privileged, and, and honored to be, you know, carrying a piece of that torch. It's really quite unique."

"I entertain myself a lot and then I end up telling [the cast] about this stuꦫff and they all just sit there and go, okay. But I'm like, did you guys see that?" Mouser tells GamesRadar+. "I feel like the most fan theories that came out were when we were doing the season four tournament. There were a lot of theories to like what people, who people thought was gonna win, who was fighting for what dojo to what degree. In the series, which takes place in the Karate Kid universe, Mouser plays Sam LaRusso, the daughter of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and his wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler). List plays Tory, who, follows a similar arc to Johnny Lawrence 🥀and becomes corrupted by Kreese - the sensei who negatively influences and effectively traumatizes Johnny in The Karate Kid 2. It's ultimately Terry Silver, the antagonist of The Karate Kid 3 who also becomes a sensei at Cobra Kai, who makes Tory feel used and unintentionally pushes her to leave the dojo and join Miyagi-Do with Sam.

"Yeah, they pranked me on set," List reveals. "Thomas, who plays Terry Silver, he told me, oh yeah, 'They're writing꧙ it that I'm your father [in season four]. And so I believed him for pretty much that whole season. I thought that was really farfetched, but Thomas Ian Griffith is] so believable when he commits to a bit - he’s so genuine."

"I definitely feel like the franchise, as a whole, has been completely behind us. It's true, though. I don't think we were ever in a negative position in which people voiced to us that they thought wished us bad or wished us ill or thought it was going to blow up in our faces," Mouser explains. "But I have loved that since we've kind of gotten to prove our medal, we've never lost that core fan base. We've gotten to grow and bring people to the original franchise. I'm a fan girl myself for a lot of different things and have been a part of fandoms where people aren't that welcoming of new fans where they're like, 'No, you weren't here for day one,' or, 'You don't know the hardships as a fan of blah blah blah.' Right? We don't have that, which has been wonderful because it means that we've gotten to have like just open arms from us to the fandom as it grows and from the fandom to us, which I'm really grateful for.ꦦ"

"I think h🧸e would've been first in line with and bought popcorn for everybody. I really do. His character - it's always been super important to me that it was woven into the Cobra Kai series. That was day one when this was pitched to me. I said, I need that to not be forgotten because without that, none of this exists, meaning that character of Miyagi and that performance by him. So I enjoy honoring those who are no longer with us that helped, create this franchise."

Continues Macchio:🔯 "And I feel, I guess I would say a responsibilitꦍy, but I take pride in making sure, or at least letting my voice be heard, of the importance of that in honor of them. I'd like to believe he'd be proud of me for that part."

With the series following a group of filmmakers as they attempt to bring the latest superhero 💮movie in a huge franchise to life, we meet several producers, with a figure named Shane being the big boss. Essentially, Shane is The Franchise's take on MCU head honcho Kevin Feige.

Co-stars Aya Cash (who plays producer Anita) and Himseh Patel (who portrays first assistant director🍌 Daniel) however put forward another name – Patton Oswalt, a comedic actor who has🦋 appeared in everything from Community to BoJack Horseman. He certainly is a chameleon.

However, Lolly Adefope, who plays third assistant director Dag, offers another, perhaps more intriguing, idea adding: "It would be cool if Shane was♓ a woman."

And then we finally crack it, as Darren Goldstein (who appears as studio representative Pat) offers: "You know who would be a gre𝄹at Shane? It turns out that Shane is a woman and it's Olivia Colman." The star of The Crown and Heartstopper certainly seems like a perfect fit – so HBO, make it happen!

In fact, as showrunner Jon Brown tells us, there is already the idea to cast Shane for a potential second season. Continuing, he admꦫits that the initial plan was that we would meet the boss this season, but feeling the pressure with the expectation surrounding the casting, they instead decided to keep it a mystery for nowಌ.

However, Brown is adamant that will change should The Franchise be renew🐟ed: "We talked abꦰout it at one point, we were going to meet him in episode 8, but it felt tricky. Casting that role would have been hard as it's a relatively small part but the expectation is quite big, so you would want someone to show up that had some status, felt big enough.

"In a way I deferred 🦩that for later, kept the powder dry, in season 2 we would want to meet him, I wouldn't want to hold off on it forever. But casting that part will be tough. Trying to find someone who has charisma but is believably of that world. It's tricky and that's why we decided in the end not to do it."

It was a fun experiment to take those familiar shapes and do our own version of it."

Whilst in the writers' room – and even on set – the team also ensured that they were reಞactive to what was goi🅺ng on in the real world of franchise moviemaking, bringing in ideas as things developed in real life. One great example lies within the second episode, where a senior producer tells the Tecto team that the head of the studio wants to make fewer films and shows within the fictional Centurion franchise.

Brühl admits: "Funnily, I wasn't thinking of my two adventures with Marvel for this because it all pretty much worked. It was a very well oiled machine that never had these mad crazy problems that𒉰 we are seeing in this show. But I have done a film that I was definitely thinking 💜of that had been a total disaster."

He continues: "The ship slowly sank the minute I arrived basically and there was no way out, so it w🔯as so depressing – arriving day one and there being no going back, no possibility of saving this thing. This wasn't the only thing ♓that inspired Brühl on The Franchise though, as he also drew on his time directing his own feature, a 2021 German comedy-drama titled Next Door. The actor also spoke to James Bond director Sam Mendes, who helmed both Skyfall and Spectre, and is a co-creator of this new show.

Mendes was more than happy to answer Brühl's questions about directing a franchise blockbuster: ♍"I directed one very small film, being in the position of pretending to be the captain of a ship, solving all these problems that always come. That helped and talking to Sam Mendes, asking him all these questions about his experiences in the big world of cinema and the craziness he has had to deal with."
