Ultimately, my prediction is that Nvidia will p✃itch the RTX 5080 as a gaming component while the flagship will cater to AI usage. 

But heওy, that’s just a guess, and we won’t know anything for certain until Nvi⛎dia reveals its next-gen GPU plans.

Yet, despite this, I think the blue team has cleverly cornered a part of the market currently being neglected by those frontrunners, and its Alchemist GPU strikes a price vs performance balance that most players will dig.

So long as you're happy with not getting to mess🐲 around with more advanced AI upscaling and new perks like Frame Generation, you'll end up with a card that should age a bit better than its rivals thanks to its 16GB memory.

Out of all the current-gen graphics cards out there, the RTX 4090 exemplifies the whole issues with GPU deals right now. For context, the cheapest RTX 4090 I can see right now at Amazon for a PNY Verto model. It’s technically down from $༺1,849.99, but consi😼dering the card’s MSRP is $1,599, it’s hardly what I’d call a real saving. 

On the AMD side of things, discounts seem to be a little more common, and the red team’s flagship 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:RX 7900 XTX did manage to drop to a remarkable $799 just last month. That’s absolutely the sort of deal I want to see on these top-tier GPUs at this stage, and I genuinely don’t feel like it’s a big ask two years into a generation. Yes, I hear you – deals on premium GPUs don’t matter if you’ve got a smaller budget. At least, it would be that price if any manufacturers had standard variants, but we’re instead seeing versions with triple cooling fans (down from $339). I’ve spent enough time with a dual fan 4060 to know that most players aren’t going to need the e🦩xtra cooling, so I’m not sure why cardmakers aren’t at least making basic models available at MSRP. It honestly wouldn’t take much to impress me. Knock $20 off the RTX 4060’s MSRP and I’ll be all over it. 

How long should you wait? 

I don’t want to pretend to be some sort of GPU deal Nostradamus, nor do I think the graphics card market is that predictable in 2024. That said, there 𓆏are a few basics I’d stick to when planning to pick up a new card. The obvious one is to wait for sales like Prime Day and Black Friday, as brands normally wait till these events to reveal substantial discounts. Do random savings happen throughout the year? Absolutely, but if that RX 7900 XTX deal mentioned above is anything to go by, stock is usually slim and ret🌞urns to full price fairly quickly. 

The second, which might also be obvious, is to wait until next-gen GPUs rear their head. I’m laughing at that piece of advice, as it didn’t really work out with the RTX 30-series since all the prices remained just as high, but I believe it’s a slightly different situation this time. Before RTX 4000 models wereဣ released, prices were all well beyond MSRP, and it took new versions to arrive to get things even remotely near their original asking price. Simply put, current cards have much less of a fall to make, meaning companies are theoretically losing less by cutting prices. 

Of course, al༺l of this depends on the MSRP of new cards. If the RTX 5090 rolls up with a much higher price tag than its 4090 predecessor, manufacturers may be less compelled to cut prices. After all, the Lovelace card will look like a bargain without even trying if the new flagship costs a chunk more, which means nothing will really happen to prices come the new generation.

The above all sounds pretty morbid from a GPU deal standpoint, and I’m aware that things can change quickly. From where I’m standing, the whole thing feels like a “wait and see” scenario, especially whe𒅌n it comes to flagship 4K GPUs. I’ll naturally be checking regularly for any real discounts and sharing them with you, but if you’ve got a card that can run the latest games right now without too many caveats, I’d put the brakes on any potential upgrades.

On the flipside, if you’re building a gaming PC right now and want to ride out 2024 with a decent build, I’d personally stick with the entry-level to mid-range cards for now. You can plan the rest of your rig to suit higher specs with DDR5 RAM and a powerful CPU, but using something like an RTX 4070🐠 will keep you from spending over $1,000 and mean ﷽you can upgrade to something more premium when prices become acceptable.

What is DLSS?

DLSS is a processܫ of speeding up your framerate without sacrificing your resolution. Usually, you’re choosing between the two - a higher resolution picture runs much slower than a low resolution one. Playing in 720p, for example, will be much smoother (though less pretty) than running in 4K. However, DLSS takes your image (or ‘samples’ it), drops the resolution to actually process it, and then upscales it with AI in real-time. That means you’re essentially running at the speed of 720p, but the end output of a much higher resolution.

On top of that, the system also adds its own frames into the mix💛, generating each one based on deep learning systems. The result can be as much as a 300% improvement in performance, especially with the latest DLSS 3-compatible games. 

DLSS works better the harder it has to work. That means it’s typically used when trying to play smoothly in a higher resolution than your graphics card would typically allow - generally 4K. Budgꦑet-minded 1080p configurations can also benefit from the boost in performance, but gains are reduced the further dow🦩n the power scale you go. 

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a fairly easy game to run - the i5-12450H / Nvidia RTX 4050 Acer Nitro 5 can run it at its Highest 1080p settings for an average of 91fps in my testing. Whack on DLSS and those numbers bump up slightly to 99fps. That’s a small jump, inline with Nvidia’s own estimation of 10% performance incr𒁃ease at FHD level resolution. 

The magic, however, lies in games that the Nitro 5 struggled with. Running F1 22 is a little harder, for example, and the rig just about scrape🀅s by with a 66fps benchmark in my most recent run. However, with DLSS 3 at the helm, those numbers head all the way north to 97fps. That’s a notable difference in speed without a visible degradation in image quality.  

Should you use DLSS on your gaming laptop?

If you have an RTX graphics card, you’ll want to be using DLSS where possible - especially when it comes to ray tracing. Adding those extra pretty reflection features to your game comes with its own power expenditure, and it can of♐ten run your framerates into the ground. DLSS re-balances everything for a much better experience overall, and the result can be magical. Of course, you’re going to be pushing your GPU a bit further with these features switched on - so if you’re running external streaming software you’ll need to consider how you manage your laptop’s overall performance. 

I’d argue that DLSS plays a much bigger role in gaming laptops than it does 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:gaming PCs, though. Yes, Nvidia’s mobile graphics cards have come a long way compared to their desktop equivalen🍃ts, but they’re still a step behin🌞d in overall output. Performance 

Before we dive into some benchmarks, it’s worth reiterating that the RTX 4080 Super isn’t a different class of card to the original. If anything, it proves to be more or less the same product with a cheaper price tag, providing a similar experience as the original during testing. Given the cheaper price tag, that’s not a bad thing, but don’t expect super levels of performance from this card.

I always like to kick off with Cyberpunk 2077, and I can finally include it again now that the weird 13th gen Intel issues have been patched. You won’t quite be able to consistently hit above 60fps at 4K without any AI assistance without tweaking some settings, but it won’t take much to hit that sweet spot. As always, switching on DLSS and Frame Generation completely changes the situation, as you’ll be able to boost fps to arounꦯd 100 with ultra settings enabled without touching any dials. If you’re planning on giving Night City a lick of ray tracing paint, you’ll have to rely on Nvidia’s upscaler to hit over 30fps, with Frame Generation helping bring things up to a nifty 80fps.

Hitman 3 usually plays nice with high end cards, and the RTX 4080 Super can ramp 4K frame rates up to 133fps. If you’re aiming to satiate a high refresh rate monitor, switching on DLSS elevates things to over 180fps, while switching ray tracing on will level things out with a 105fps average. I was skeptical of inevitable caveats at first, so I immediately started zooming into the game’s array of complex textures and foliage in search of artefacts and weirdness. Yet, apart from some minor monetary aliasing oddities around characters during cutscenes, I couldn’t find any other upscaling warts, and I reckon I’d struggle to tell the difference if I wasn’t specifically looking. 

Moving onto outings that aren’t armed with frame generation, and I’m pretty pleased with Total War: Warhammer 3 on the RTX 4080 Super. I was a🐽ble to comfortably hit 76fps with everything cranked up to max, which isn’t half bad conside🐬ring how demanding the RTS game’s chaotic battlefield can be. 

As🌠 for temperatures, I rarely noticed things drift past 70°c, with readings generally hovering at around 62°c under full load. It’d take a big workload to get this card anywhere near its 90°c limit, and keeping thing𒈔s frosty doesn’t come with noise caveats attached. While I don’t go out of my way to actually measure loud GPUs, with game volume muted, I couldn’t specifically hear the RTX 4080 Super over other coolers like my case fans.

Specs

With the card starting at $799 / £769, it’d be a little disappointing if RTX 4070 Ti Super ꧂specs weren’t out to impress, and t🐻here’s absolutely an on paper difference compared to the original. For starters, Nvidia has finally caved in and armed its mid-range Lovelace GPU with 16GB GDDR6X VRAM. Considering this is something that has cast a shadow over the line-up since day one, I’m surprised it has taken this long for a redemption release. Still, I’m pleased to see the green team get on board with more memory, especially since it leaves the door open to more 4K possibilities.

The GPU stowed away within the RTX 4070 Ti Super wields a beefier AD103 chip. It’s not quite full fat, as it has 8,448 CUDA cores enabled out of a possible 10,240. If you’re looking for that sort of count, you’re going to have to opt for the RTX 4080 Super instead. Otherwise, we’re talking about a 10% shad💟er increase that should theoretically correlate with better performance.

Other than that, everything else with the RTX 4070 Ti Super remains the same. It’ll still sip the same power from your PSU thanks to its 285W TDP and boasts boost clock speeds up to 2,610MHz. That may sound a little boring considering its title, but I guess changing the GPU within is enough♍ to grant this card a metaphorical cape. Just like the original RTX 4070 Ti, there’s no Founder’s Edition. Therefore, it’s worth mentioning that I’m using a PNY model for this review♔ instead, which just so happens to be overclocked slightly to 2,625MHz.

Design

The PNY GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super VERTO design combines fashion sense and functionality, as you would expect from a custom variant. On an aesthetic level, this version is practically identical to the OG, wearing the exact same triple cooler three slot shroud that screams minimalist. I’d argue this model doesn’t quite pull the look off as well as the MSI card featured in our 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 review, which might b🅷e down to the crude industrial vibe provided by ཧits chonky cooling fins.

Of course, it’d be silly to ignore the practicality of PNY’s cooling setup, as its trio of RTX 4070 TI Super cooling fanꦬs are going to shift a lot of heat. Thankfully, that didn’t also translate into louder caveats during use, with noise levels feeling on par with the original model and other cards with a similar setup. 

My biggest gripe with the RTX 4070ܫ Ti Super’s design is one that ties to almost every RTX 4000 card out there. If you guessed it’s the placement of the 12VHPWR power connector you can pat yourself on the back, as keeping it pretty much in the centre is a cable management nightmare. The inside of my case is already questionable, but making me have to wrangle a dongle that extends from the middle of the card is a sure fire way to keep me from redemption. As such, my gaming PC lacks the clean, spacious internal look of other rigs, and while I’m partly to blame, I’m absolutely going to dunk on Nvidia as an excuse♕.  

Features

The mere mention of anything AI tends to get my back up these days, but it remains one of the standout features of cards like the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super. Namely, Nvidia DLSS 3.5 and Frame Generation will provide you with access to peꦫrformance enhancing tech that borderline feels like technomancy, especially since the latter can boost fps with almost no visual evidence. 

Some enthusiasts will argue that these techniques aren’t worthwhile compared to native raw performance, and there are absolutely caveats tied to the tool kit when it comes to potential latency and artifacting. However, Nvidia does offset any potential lag with Reflex abilities and, from experience, you’ll notice less visual quirks with Super Resolution upscaling compared to the likes of AMD FSR 2. Nevertheless, we are talking about enhancements🏅 that won’t work with every release out there, and if you only play games without support, the feature will mean nothing to you.

PNY’s Velocity💫X suite will provide you with plenty of dials to play around with. The software will enable you to set fan speed parameters and mess around with custom overclocking if you’re brave enough, and its interface is pretty clean compared to some custom settings kits out there. This is where you’d also be able to customise RGB lighting, but the VERTO edition I’m testing is completely devoid of flashing lights.

Performance 

Moving onto PNY GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super VERTO performance, and while I was able to produce some impressive benchmarks, luck wasn’t exactly on my si💎de. By that, I mean a Cyberpunk 2077 update landed that is meant to boost performance for Intel 13th gen CPU users, but instead introduces egregious frame spikes. As such, I wasn’t able to get a true average fps reading for the RPG using my test rig, which means my go-to stress test game isn’t too available this time around. I’ve still included some of the results below, but the fact they’re almost the same as the original’s is a sign that something is off. 

On the bright side, I was able to use the rest of my test suite of games without a hitch, kicking things off with Hitman 3. At 1440p, the stealth romp managed to ma🎉intain an average of 144fps, which is a hefty uplift compar🥂ed to the 103fps produced by the original. I was also delighted to find that ramping things up to 4K only reduced that figure by 20fps, leaving plenty of headroom. Naturally, throwing ray tracing into the mix completely tanks those figures, but switching on DLSS 3.5 did help me punt frame rates back from 45fps to 126fps. 

Running Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1440p also produced some pleasing benchmarks, averages reaching 164fps. The gap narro♏ws between the Super card and the original when it comes to 4K, but I’m not about to start grumbling about Lara’s outing running at 107fps. I am, however, grateful for the modest uplift wh♈en it comes to ray tracing, with an increase from 67 to 73fps adding a bit more distance from that sub 60 line. 

The more I use Returnal as a benchmark game, the more I realise it’s pretty gutsy with GPU performance. That may explain why there’s not a huge difference in frame rates using the new RTX 4070 Ti Super compared to the vanilla variant, with ꧟only a 6 frame difference be🦂tween the two at 1440p. This same trend also applies to 4K and ray tracing tests, leaving little to be desired. 

Unfortunately, Total War: Warhammer 3 ended up committing similar sin𓄧s. At 1440p, I only gained 9fps compared to the non-super card, and my 4K figure only increased from 60 to 66fps. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting a massive performance gulf between the two SKUs, and I use this strategy game mashup specifically because it’s taxing. I think my feelings of disappointment are linked to the impressive differences measured in Hitman 3 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which perhaps simply illustrates that your mileage may vary across your entireಞ Steam library.

I want to stress that the above benchmarks focus on raw performance under strenuous circumstances. Therefore, there are various tweaks you can make to elevate frame rates that aren’t going to hinder the visual experience that much. That includes using both Nvidia Super Resolution and Frame Generation where available, as it can work wonders if you’re struggling with fps. For example, I was able to reach 114fps in Returnal at 4K with ray tracing enabled, and it was all thanks to DLSS 3.5. The AI feature won’t always be there to save the day, and🌳 I get why some players might feel icky using it to simulate better performance, but it’s still worthwhile.  

Should you buy the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super? 

As of now, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super is my new go-to mid-range GPU, and I’d recommend picking it up over the original by default. That’s not to say there’s a huge difference betw♏een the souped-up card and the first RTX 4070 Ti, but having 16GB VRAM at your disposal and more CUDA cores does help uptick performance in demanding games. That said, if vanilla variants start showing up for a chunk less, it might be worth taking the Clark Kent approach rather than paying more for its alter ego.

That’s largely down to the fact it only features two DIMM slots, which means you’d need to swap out the two existing 8GB sticks of memory for a higher capacity set. The new Alienware Aurora R16 will no doubt provide an extra punch thanks to its new RTX Super cards, but I do think it’s worth waiting for more builds. RTX 4080 Super options are also missing from the line-up, and it’ll be interesting to see where it falls price wise compared to its siblings. Players will als൩o be able to ask Convai-NPCs about their surroundings an🃏d receive real-time actions in response, Nvidia says, and they'll interact with each other when the player is away - which sounds only slightly unnerving.

"NPCs interact with each other even when the player is idle, producing countless options for how these characters perceive and engage with their surroundings," a pressꦺ release specifies, which smacks of the ahead-of-its-time NPC routines of The Elder Scrolls IV: ꦯOblivion's beloved villagers, which are a touchstone for NPC behavior to this day.  

AI's involvement in game development can be a touchy subject for both those making the games and those playing them.
