To be blunt, the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite was never a viable version for me to play. Muddy visuals paired with imprecise controls and a framerate locked at 30FPS amounted to a vastly inferior experience when compared with PS5 (my main platform), ultimately meaning that I rarely bothered to load up new seasonal updates. There’s a depth and detail to the Battle Royale map that allows for vibrant and colorful map locations like fꦦarmland surrounding Kappa Kappa Factory to shine. With Fortnite Super now here, the metallic sheen of Utopia City and the bright oranges of Supernova Academy’s gymnasium building stand out against lush green grasslands and imposing mountains. Most importantly, long-range battles are viable, as players appear clearly as they traverse distant hilltops.

Mouse mode is an unexpected delight

An update for Fortnite on Nintendo Switch 2 arrived alongside the latest season, adding in mouse controls. I’ve dabbled with mouse and keyboard in the past, impressed by the extra level of precision aiming while being simultaneously held back by the stiffness of WASD movement. Enabling mouse controls turns one Joy-Con on its side, and by attaching the wrist strap attachment that comes with the Switch 2, you’re able to use it like a mouse. The real highlight is what happens in your other hand. The other Joy-Con operates much like one half of a controller, handling movement and aiming down♔ sights. It’s a winning combination that really gives the Switch 2 version a unique selling point. There’s a huge advantage in using the mouse to swing your camera around, and extra control is given during long-range shootouts.

Of course, the Nintendo Switch 2’s mouse function do♛esn’t quite compare to a proper gaming mouse, and I certainly spent quite some time in menus dialling in the sensitivity of the scope and targeting. After a while though, it all clicks, especially after remapping some of the buttons on your mouse controller for easy sliding and jumping. You can of course plug a mouse into your PS5 or Xbox, or use all manner of configurations on PC, but there’s something about the Switch 2’s Joy-Con and mouse setup that feels right.

There is a problem with using your Switch 2’s controllers this way, however. It comes down to a grip I have with the Switch 2’s position as a console, in that you’ll need to be sat at a desk to make the best use of the mouse mode. Currently, I have an awkward setup involving a laptop hard case balanced on top of a small wooden footstool so I can play on my sofa. I have no doubt there will be some third-party solution to this in the future, perhaps even a sort of Labo cardboard box offering from Nintendo. Still, you can just about make it work, and I have to say I’m impressed by how viable the mouse mode is for Fortnite’s Battle Royale andꦑ OG modes.

The draw distance and terrain detailing are both astounding, but so is the foliage quality in that forest image. My real highlight, however, was the sheer volume of NPCs in that♍ village scene - a density, if not quantity, that blows anything The Witcher 3 managed out of the water.

The other notable part of this demo was a look at Ciri herself. We got a good look at her i🙈n the original trailer, of course, but CDPR has offerꦿed a little extra here. Nothing much has changed, but I do enjoy the picture of her facing down a distant draconid - at this distance, it's hard to tell exactly what it is, but it has thrown me. Witchers don't hunt true dragons, of course, but it's also not obviously a Wyvern or Forktail. Perhaps it's a previously unseen type of massive, flying lizard?

Actually, I might be wrong about those lizard allegations. Some of the 🐽official images from the trailer are pretty dark, but they revolve around some unfortunate NPCs appearing to come up against a nighttime threat. In those pictures, we get up-close-and-personal with some kind of bat-like monsꦿter with big wings - that could be the flying creature from earlier, but even if it is, I can't tell what we're coming up against.

Finally, there's a closer look at Ciri's horse. One of these images is an out-of-game render, but the othe🦹r seems to be an in-game shot. Sure, it's not Roach - but actually, maybe it is, who knows what Ciri's horse-naming conventions will be? Why wouldn't shꦐe borrow them from Geralt?

As for the Concord Open Beta, anyone can play so you just need to install it onto your PS5 or PC when it launches on July 18 at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 6pm BST with no pre-purchase required. However, those on PS5 can pre-download the beta from July 17 at 10am PDT to get ahead and dive straight in at launch.

Be aware that progress carries over from the Early Access Beta to the Open Beta, so you can get a gooꦰd head start by playing early. Unfortunately, beta progre🐲ss does not carry over to the full game, which launches on August 23. Beta testers will be awarded with the Lil' Frog weapon charm and the Star Flare Business Card as a thank you gift.

If you don't receive access initially then all is not lost, as you may get invited further down the line – though the ultimate aim of the playtest is to test the game as quickly as possible with a relatively small group so that Hades 2 can then be launched into Early Access onও Steam and Epic Games, where everyone will be able to purch♒ase and play it.

But I just don't think this derivation of Epic Games' familiar sandbox will (or even can) come close to Minecraft's sense of wonder any time soon; nor do I think any other contender is capable of claiming the Eye of Ender-set crown. Sure, the fundamentals of Minecraft are easier for small🤪 hands to get to grips with than pretty much every game in this space, but I'd also argue kids of this age weigh up their favorite games without preconceptions. They enjoy the game that's most fun, and whenever my kids and I play together, that fun is almost always inspired by discovery.

Even in Creative Mode – where Mobs, Creepers, Spiders and everything else that goes bump in the night leaves you alone, items can be crafted in infinite supply, and you can literally fly around the map with the touch of a button – just being able to climb the highest mountain, plumb the deepest ocean, and mine the darkest cave is💞 a triumph in itself. I'm never not amazed by the😼 sense of achievement my own kids visibly feel when making the most innocuous discoveries, and the sense of wonder that envelopes the whole experience.

The first time we returned to our little private server to find that the koi fish we'd built a pond for was still alive, for example, led to five full minutes of unbridled excitement. We were up in🥃 arms when a traveling salesman appeared to raid our basement full of gems, leaving an old rope in place of our loot (we left the hatch open); and we spent the best part of an hour building a diving board over a lake that reached high above the clouds grazin💃g outer space itself, giggling the entire time.

In contrast, while my kids love Fortnite Lego, and while I also appreciate it's not necessarily aimed at their age group, that sense of wonder in discovery clearly isn't universal. We have fun doing the same things in Fortnite's familiar Island setting, throwing up houses and decorating them with incongruous furnishings, but it's just not the same as Minecraft's underlying if you can see it you can explore it raiso⛄n d'etre. Which isn't to shit on Fortnite Lego, or any sandbox world-building game more generally, it's more to hail the seemingly interminable appeal of Minecraft.

And while I realize I'm waxing lyrical about a game that people felt this way about 13 years ago, myself included, the fact I'm rediscovering it with my♔ children and feel exactly the same after so much time (and, evidently, as do they) speaks volumes for the timelessness of this game. Its blocky facade looked extremely dated in 2011, meaning it doesn't feel any worse for wear in 2024. In fact, I think I'm enjoying it even more than I did way back when while also forging memories that'll last a lifetime. And that alone is enough♊ to keep me coming back for more and more.

Lego Fortnite is the Animal Crossing replacement I never expected, but now I can't put it down.

It's unusual, then, that Epic Games has found itself with a totally different problem regarding Fortnite – fans are constantly irate over the item sh༺op and the inability to spen𝓀d more money.

Fortnite's item shop is a robust beast that🐭 dwarfs most item shops in the entire industry. Every day, the shop updates at the same time with a new slate of goods, like skins and emotes. Like most games, Fortnite also has events and weekly challenges, which encourage players to log in regularly. Skins in particular might pop up in the item shop for a short period of time, only to be completely unavailable for purchase for over a year: if you missed it, you missed it. Anxiety over missing out is baked into Fortnite's bones, which is why social media accounts and websites theme themselves entirely around what's for sale that day. It's like Xur in Destiny, except way more intense.☂

This Pavlovian urge is hardly unique to me, judging by the chatter on social media any time the shop happens to slow down. titled "Since we haven't got good item shops in a while, which single skin do you really want?" got𝓰 over three thousand upvotes from people listing dozens of different items they were pining over. This is but one example of many. "Anyone else getting sick of waiting 24 hours for the item shop to change to nothing new," posted a few days ago. The topic is so pervasive that in one thread, a user suggested that mods create a sticky topic that could contain the seemingly daily discussions about the staℱte of the item shop.

Typically, the shop shows off a wide variety of wares – but every so often, it'll only swap in a few things. Specific segments, especially ones dedicated to real-world brands that have lent their ꧃IP to Epic Games, tend to stick around for longer. "When is Lady Gaga ever going to leave the item shop?" . In general, diehard fans have strong opinions about how well the shop rotates through Fortnite's enormous suite of items, . It's no𝔍t that the UI is terrible: it's that people want a more robust selection of things to buy.

The people making Fortnite are only human, however, so the shop isn't always the digital equivalent of the Mall of America. Recently, for example, Fortnite has been gearing up to release a new season that will be live by the time you read this. Typically a new season transforms the entire game, complete wit﷽h new points of inteꦓrest, mechanics that could sustain their own games, and a lengthy battle pass. Lately, and coincidentally, the shop hasn't been quite as diverse. My assumption is that a few outfits aren't the priority for the developer when it's putting the finishing touches on a massive content update, and that's doubly true when said content is having server issues.

Yet if we're being realistic, during these slower periods, Fortnite is still likely rotating in more new things than most AAA games. To💃 wit, one player who kept tabs on what the shop put out noted that compared to other r♏ecent seasons. Despite this, the same thread still declared that the item shop selection overall was "bad." Some of this displeasure has to do with what the skins actually are – just because it's new doesn't mean it's good. Lego versions of some skins, for example, often fail to capture elements that make the full skin compelling in the first place.

People also have strong opinions about skins, particularly when it comes to meme ones, or characters that are a near-constant, like Peely. Still, when you consider that you can only wear one skin at a time during a game, what we're looking at is frustration that people can't expand their digital toybox. I say this as someone who is also cursed with an obsession with the item shop, to the degree that I'll load the game up every day regardless of whether o🌟r not I'm getting in a match. What if there's something really cool in there, I'll say, knowing that I don't even use 80% of what I buy.

Is there Splitscreen in Lego Fortnite?

When it first launched, there was no splitscreen or couch co-op mode available in Lego Fortnite, so if you wanted to play in co-op then you had to connect two systems via the internet. However, that has changed as of October 2024 and Lego Fortnite now has a splitscreen or couch co-op mode available, so you can play locally with a frien🌺d using only one device.

A self-confessed "massive fan" of Garry's Mod, Salim says he still speaks to friends from the game's community today, and likewise c꧃herishes still-active friendships forged during his formative years in World of Warcraft. Storytelling has always been a driving force for Salim, and he credits playing video games 🌌from a young age for strengthening his desire to tell stories in his work.

These qualities, Salim reckons, were first instilled by virtue of pass-the-pad sessions with his father in the '90s, playing the earliest Sonic the Hedgehog games on the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis, for ꦓthose reading Stateside), and cherishing a sense of closeness in these thoughtful moments that would stay with him forever. "I very much come from a backgrou❀nd of stoic men," Salim says, "so the idea of sharing that moment with him, and feeling that we were both enjoying and connecting – that was beautiful."

That sentiment is directly reflected in Tales of Kenzera: Zau, whose narrative explores the love between a father and son, and the transformative power of loss. Filling the shoes of the eponymous Zau, you assume the grief of the protagonist while embarking on their quest for spiritual healing – across gorgeous, mystical 2.5D realms, while flirting with the ungoverned cosmic powers of the warrior shaman. Throughout our conversation, the thing that impresses me most about Salim is his openness to explore the themes and emotion driving this clearly defined passion project. Assuming that passion transfers into Tales of Kenzera: Zau itself – and I have no reason to believe otherwise – then it's likely to be something pretty special, both as a Metroidvania video game, and an interactive and persuasive exploration of such a universal and sensitive subject. My last question for Salim, then, is a simple one: What would his father say if he could see him now?

"Whꦍy didn't you write a book instead?" he says, between bouts of laughter. "I think he wo🐭uld be proud. Not just because of the accomplishment of making this game, but mainly because I'm using what he gave me from a very young age to essentially share something that I love – which is telling stories."

This may look like the end of the line, but if you destroy the chest you can continue into the next area with two more chests to raid. The path beyond this appears to lead to a dead end, but if you break through the sturdy rock blocking your route forward there then you can swim through a gap into the final area of the Secret Cave in Fortnite.

The Secret Cave in Fortnite opens up for this last section, providi🦄ng three more chests to open along with plenty of floor loot, and even a crop of shield mushrooms growing under the trees. If you listen then you'll hear the calypso music of the Coral Buddies, and you can find these returning cute creatures on the small central island or the little ship floating nearby.

One thing to note is tha💖t the Portapotty found in the corner cannot be interacted with and does not connect up to a hidden escape tunnel, so you'll need to exit the Fortnite Secret Cave via the same route you entered – make sure you have enough time to get out that way before the Storm Circle traps you inside!

To play ranked matches in Fortnite, you need to follow the prompt on the lobby screen that we've highlighted above to turn on the Ranked option. There are a total of 18 Fortnite Ranks available, and when you first join Fortnite Ranked you'll need to complete a match to reveal your initial ranking, based on your past performance as well as the outcome of that first match. That initial ranking will apply across both Battle Royale and Zero Build, though fro𝓀m then onwards the two will be ranked individually. You'll progress through the ranks as follows, with a percentage displayed against your current rank to show how close you are to moving up to the next level:

Once you get to Elite rank, you'll be matched against other high-ranking𒀰 players to fight for the right to advance to Champion level, then ascend to Unreal.
